ECLECTIC PROG

A Progressive Rock Sub-genre

From Progarchives.com, the ultimate progressive rock music website

Eclectic Prog definition

The term 'eclectic' in the context of progressive rock describes a summation of elements from various musical sources, and the influences and career paths of bands that take from a wide range of genres or styles. While progressive music can be, in a larger sense, eclectic, the 'Eclectic Prog' term is specially meant to reference bands that trespass the boundaries of established Progressive Rock genres or that blend many influences.

Eclectic Prog combines hybrids of style and diversity of theme, promoting many elements from different sources. The Eclectic category recognizes bands that evolved markedly over their career (in a progressive, evolutionary way), or have a plural style without a clear referential core.

The basic features lie within the music's variety, rich influences, art tendencies and classic prog rock elements. Among the representative bands are KING CRIMSON, VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, and GENTLE GIANT.

Dice Eclectic Prog

Review by Progfan97402

2 stars I can see why people are divided over this album, and I'm sorry to say that my reaction towards this album isn't favorable. While they did have the chops to potentially make great prog, the major problem I have with these guys is Robert Holmin, the lead vocalist. I assume that's him doing the bulk of the singing, but his nasally, accented vocals really detract. This coming from someone who heard his share of Eloy albums and love many of them (Ocean and Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes are masterpieces). The problem with Dice is the vocals really sink the album. I understand the never-released-at-the-time The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is an all-instrumental album and for many listeners, including those not too keen on their sole album (released during their lifetime) seem to gravitate to that one. I do like the cover; it looks like a Salvador Dali painting (it's not actually him) with the band's logo done in the Disney font. I imagine that's a reference of Walt Disney and Salvador Dali actually meeting each other in 1946 to make a film called Destino (which was never finished and only to be completed in 2003 (long after Disney and Dali had passed away). I do like some of the humor involved, but this album simply left me cold. Änglagård were influenced by these guys, but I often wonder if it was The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse that inspired them. There are lots of prog rock albums, some of them masterpieces as everyone says they are, there are overrated albums, and there are those albums that I just can't get into, and this is one of them.

Plantoid Eclectic Prog

Review by David_ProgCritique

4 stars Once is not customary, let's first stop at the magnificent "artwork" of ' Terrapath ', which is reminiscent of the heyday of Progressive Rock album covers from the 70s (although created by software based on Artificial Intelligence, so?). The group Plantoid , a young British group, plays music inspired by Progressive Rock, tinged with Jazz Fusion and some Folk or psychedelic Rock elements. It's a style that particularly speaks to me, and it's a great discovery to which I invite you. "Is That You" takes its time to set the scene and imprint the style of the band. A long instrumental build-up with Jazz sounds opens the door to the very pure voice of Chloe Coyne which could have come out of a Bossa-nova album from the 50s. The mixture of vocal softness and instrumental groove is a real success and constitutes a strong point of the group. At the end, the atmosphere changes to make way for "fuzzy" instrumentation which tends towards Psychedelic Rock. Would my favorite streaming app have directed me to another band between the first and second songs? No, it's still Plantoid on "Pressure", a Pop-Punk-Garage track which completely contrasts with the rest of the album. I would describe it as "oddity", certainly intentional. The fundamentals are restored on "Modulator", and we happily find the soft voice, the up-tempo jazz and beautiful flights of solo guitar. We will also notice layers of keyboards broken by slightly dissonant chords which bring spice to the composition. "It's Not Real" is a short instrumental, as if escaped from a dream, with a very elaborate atmosphere thanks to the contribution of different sounds and sound effects. Then comes the hyper-syncopated riff of "Dog's Life", on which a very melodic singing develops despite the incessant changes of tone. The second part of the song is marked by a furious Jazz-psyche break. It is a stripped-down arrangement of complex harmony that characterizes "Only When I'm Thinking", on which the vocals are clearly highlighted. The following 3 titles follow one another to form a suite. This begins with "Wander/Wonder", the start of which made me think of certain Sade titles from the 80s. After the "Wander" part, it's time for the very effective instrumental passage "Wonder", a marvel of riffs and sounds, rhythmic breaks and Jazz-Rock improvisations. The segue into "Insomniac (Don't Worry)" is almost imperceptible. This title seems to express in music the disturbed phases of sleep and awakening on a rhythm that runs after time. And it is the energetic instrumental "GY Drift" which ends the suite in the style of a modern-day Santana . To gently close the record, the aptly named "Softly Speakin " surprises with its Dream Pop-style piano accompaniment of which the main voice once again constitutes the central element. This first Plantoid album is a success. The group manages to share its universe, sometimes ethereal, sometimes more furious, but with constant instrumental mastery. This "bi-polarity" is embodied on one side by the angelic voice of singer Chloe Coyne and on the other side by the organic and earthy instruments guided by Tom Coyne 's guitar . A first record which calls for others. We will not fail to closely follow the development of this promising new group.

3 stars I seriously question if I'm actually listening to the same album as you guys??

I held off getting this album for many years because of it's ultra high rating, and Pawn Hearts is my favourite prog album so I kind of wanted to save the best for last. I saw the recent Charisma release as a sign it was time to get my face smashed off by the ultimate VDGG album!

I feel like this album is a big step backwards to everything they built, so many straight forward rock sections, some budget Genesis sections, forced and detached vocals, lots of basic rock drumming, I think they mostly played it safe and default to heavy rock between all the interesting bits, or maybe it was to give a clear difference from The Silent Corner And The Empty Stage? The album definitely gets better as it progresses past the first two tracks.

It's 3.4 stars from me, I hope in time I can learn to appreciate this album more.

4 stars 1. Abysses is worth for its energetic intro which demonstrates once again the progressive drift at JPL, setting fire with a Zeppelinian atmosphere, eye the 'Kashmir' 2. Dr Fergusson and the whims of the wind, vol.1: Above the roofs to listen just to decipher the typical JPL or NEMO sound; yes sometimes we cannot transcribe 3. Devil's Dance for the cool interlude which shows the extent of its progressive grip and poses the listener, we begin to sink under the water 4. Storm for the latent piano bringing far; the voice slightly breaking the prog atmosphere, yes the louvetonian sound so intense that the voice hooks me back to the old world and puts me back on earth, 5. In the moon again for this imp guitar solo that I listen to over and over, in which I tell myself that it is one of the most musically beautiful in the progressive world, nothing less. The text holds up but is not sufficiently integrated into the melody in my opinion; maybe too keen to look for an instrument voice 6. Dr Fergusson and the whims of the wind, vol.2: Above the Pyramids for the second piece and the piano arpeggio intro, the magical slide guitar, an air again in the style of 'Kashmir' which comes and goes over the course of the album; it is pompous and effective, an Arabic violin arises and the progressive sensation is at its height; it's objectively fabulous, quite simply with this guitar which bewitches me; the finale reminds me of 'The Knife', well jerked by the drums; in short with JPL, excuse NEMO you have to know how to sink into your albums so as not to stay on the surface

7. Philéas and his 20 minutes on the clock; 4 drawers with the guitar beginning with an air of the gadget inspector, energetic, tortured, enjoyable; 'in these cobbled streets lit with lanterns', yes the voice I get used to there, the phrasing bewitches me, a latency period where the voice goes in harmony; well we left and the Japanese interlude, the gong that sends shivers down your spine, yes we are in the new worlds, the prog spirit is there; the time, the notes make me integrate the vocal into the musical framework; so with prog you have to know how to hold on and persevere; 4'15 and this sublime moment, time has contracted, we almost forget it; the voice returns for a time, with Zeuhlian folk phrasing; the linked title which passes over the enjoyable drifts of the JPL sound, a rock, electric guitar which allows itself to guide on the prog shores, unrelatable, just suggested with this unique guitar which made me prick my ears a long time ago almost 20 years old, a straw in the prog universe; the finale with the birds to go back down, perfect

2 bonuses with 11. Africa for the walk in the middle of the safari with the Mellotron which appears, ah why not put one on before, it's too beautiful, too hot; the guitar seems to talk alone and brings you before the waning day 12. Naval battle and the organ, magnificent, that little extra which could have made a major French group, yes I weigh my words, there is (was) possibility; the guitar goes on a bluesy side, and it merges after the LED ZEPPELIN on a frenzied DEEP PURPEL, the panard; 5 minutes and a dreamlike space break; note this live finale where JPL presents its musicians, stunning; what can I say in conclusion: a Plant voice and we had the French group of the beginning of the millennium, no less.

Auto Reconnaissance
The Tangent Eclectic Prog

Review by Mellotron Storm
Prog Reviewer

4 stars 4.5 stars. I just recently found out that THE TANGENT are releasing a new album in 2024 and for the first time it's Andy Tillison all by himself, doing it all. The five piece lineup of Tillison, Travis, Machin, Reingold and Roberts stayed in place from 2018's "Proxy" and included this 2020 record as well as 2022's "Tales From The Hard Shoulder". A nice 3 album run and I am not surprised at the lineup change in 2024 just at how far reaching the shakedown has been. I'm already curious about the album to come after that one to see where Andy goes with the lineup.

"Auto Reconnaissance" was a complete surprise that I did not see coming in any way. First spin revealed a word heavy album with Tillison at his story-telling best, but I was on the fence until that third spin when I realized this one is special. I have never felt the emotion I experienced here ever on a THE TANGENT album or the power. Both of these are brief moments of time but it has been a long time since water has risen in my eyes like this while listening to my music. Specifically during the 28 1/2 minute "Lie Back & Think Of England".

In the liner notes Tillison mentions that this album was composed before the 2020 outbreak but recorded during it and mastered, mixed etc. during lockdown. This album has Andy's visit to New Jersey/ New York as the main theme to this record. And Andy should be really proud of what has has done here. Charming, fun, sentimental there is a lot of emotion on this one, the lyrics are so meaningful. The instrumental work is so impressive, a lot of lighter jazzy stuff but as I said earlier they can get heavy as well. This album has it all even some space rock stuff on the bonus track that had me quite excited the first time I heard it.

And while I'm raving about this one it's not perfect by any means but I get it, the lighter stuff like "Under Your Spell" a love song that I doubt Tillison would have used in the past, but he is sentimental here. "The Tower Of Babel" is too catchy but the lyrics are brilliant. A classic rant from Mr. Tillison this time about technology. The opener "Life On Hold" would be the third track that I consider Andy's warm blankets as it were, written while in lockdown. His happy places you could say. An energetic start to this record. The final tune with a lot of optimism is "The Midas Touch" the closer. "For all of us who lived through covid-19 and in memory of those who didn't" is the sub-title. Light and jazzy with synths. Upbeat with pleasant vocals. "Welcome back my winter sun" is a repeated line.

I don't usually mention bonus tracks and certainly don't even consider them with my final rating because they aren't part of the main album but this is a rare one that is incredible and truly a bonus to this meaningful album. I mentioned earlier there's a space rock groove here that is awesome. A spacey soundscape to start until around 4 minutes in when it turns more powerful. It settles back around 8 minutes to spacey and jazzy motifs. A 12 1/2 minute ride. There are two epic tracks on here. The 16 minute "Jinxed In Jersey" that is like following Andy as he takes the long journey by foot to the Statue of Liberty and so on. The man can write a song. Jazzy with almost spoken words early. Lots of organ and Theo adding the wind instruments. It turns almost reverential when he visits the statue.

The "Lie Back & Think Of England" at close to a half hour in length introduces us once again to a character named Earnest who was first brought up on 2006's "A Place In The Queue" a WWII pilot fighting for freedom for England. This is what he fought for? Is kind of the idea here. Incredible emotion like I've never heard from Andy. The emotion and the power after 18 minutes is moving to say the least.

This is presently my fourth favourite album by this band after "The Music That Died Alone", "Down And Out In Paris And London" and "The Rust Of Forgotten Machinery", the fifth one is debatable between a few records right now. Peter Hammill would be proud of you Andy, the lyrics you write are right up there with your hero.

Kumorigahara Eclectic Prog

Review by TenYearsAfter

4 stars The Japanese four piece formation Kumorigahara was founded in 2013 and features Shota Ishigaki (bass, vocals and second guitar), Vaiolite (electric guitar), Akira (keyboards, organ and piano) and Mu Japan (drums). Website info: "The band has an important background in independent music scene, and their high level of technique and powerful performance have made them a key figure in the next generation". In December 2021 Kumorigahara released its eponymous debut album on the Japanese Arcangelo label. This album was recommended by a friend who knows me since the early Nineties, we are both progrock reviewers and love vintage keyboards (especially the Mellotron). And as a huge fan of the Japanese progrock (I even attended gigs by Gerard and Ars Nova in The Netherlands) I was very curious to this highly praised new Japanese band. Well, after my first listening session I was blown away, and overwhelmed, what an exciting sound, what a very dynamic and varied compositions, and what an excellent musicians!

A pastoral Mellotron sound collage (like Anekdoten) in the opener Prefectural Route 334.

From powerful and dynamic up-tempo blend of prog (King Crimson) and jazzrock with pleasant Japanese vocals (reminding me of Gerard), fiery guitar, swirling Hammond organ and a furious rhythm-section to mellow with varied piano work, then a biting guitar solo, melancholical vocals with Mellotron violins, and finally an ultra-bombastic atmosphere with heavy guitar and powerful Hammond in the track 3472-1. The second part strongly evokes Seventies Deep Purple on stage.

Nakano Street is a wonderful ballad featuring majestic waves of Mellotron violins, warm twanging guitar and vocals, halfway a moving guitar solo (backed by powerful drums), Mellotron violins and Hammond runs, the interplay is amazing. It's incredible how easily this band switches between mellow, heavy, dynamic and bombastic!

Sunrise On The Sand starts dreamy with melancholical vocals, Mellotron violins and Hammond, then Heavy Prog like Made In Japan featuring exciting soli and duels with swirling Hammond organ and blistering guitar. Now the music shifts back to mellow with tender piano runs, and warm vocals (again reminding me of Gerard), Mellotron violins join. Wonderful, and what a strong contrast with the previous heavy and bombastic climate. Finally a strong build-up to a powerful and sumptuous sound with heavy guitar, Hammond, propulsive drums, and emotional vocals, wow!

Snow Bug begins with the mellow side of the band with dreamy twanging acoustic guitar, sparkling classical piano and pleasant vocals, topped with lush Mellotron violins (early King Crimson inspired). Next a slow rhythm and more powerful sound. Halfway an exciting slide guitar solo, another strong musical idea. In the second part the music builds from sparkling piano and inspired vocals (backed by a strong rhythm-section) to a fiery and howling guitar solo, embellished with omnipresent majestic Mellotron violins, goose bumps.

Tryptan delivers a swinging mid-tempo, with the distinctive sound of the Hohner clavinet and Vox Continental organ (known from House Of The Rising Sun), the rhythm-section is excellent, halfway fiery guitar and then swirling organ, very tasteful and dynamic.

Tears of Rabbit is another alternating and dynamic song. First a swinging up-tempo featuring flashy synthesizer flights, propulsive drum beats and powerful vocals, in a bombastic climate. Then a mellow break with the distinctive Japanese koto, Mellotron flutes, and dreamy vocals, simply wonderful. Halfway Heavy Prog with swirling Hammond and powerful drum beats, then a fiery guitar solo. In the end spectacular pitchbend driven Minimoog synthesizer flights, again in a bombastic atmosphere. Variety rules!

Finally the epic composition Kawazu-zakura, close to 14 minutes. The first part features bombastic Hammond organ and harder-edged guitar work, soon a fat Moog sound joins. Next the music turns into a powerful mid-tempo with heavy guitar, thunderous drums, and another swirling Hammond solo (like "Jon Lord meets Toshio Egawa"), pretty exciting! Suddenly the climate shifts to dreamy with Mellotron flutes and the koto, topped with warm vocals. The long final part delivers a compelling atmosphere, from mellow and psychedelic to a bombastic mid-tempo, culminating in a powerful sound with Hammond, Mellotron violins, fiery guitar play, and propulsive drums, another 'wow' moment!

What a stunning debut album by this new Japanese formation, highly recommended!

Alquin Eclectic Prog

Review by TenYearsAfter

4 stars In the mid-70s I attended a school party as a young adolescent, I was curious to a loud sound, coming from the gym. When I arrived it turned out that Dutch band Alquin had just started their concert, on stage I noticed a huge group of musicians, almost the same amount of people that was in the crowd! But soon the crowd increased, the blend of rock, blues, jazz and prog appealed to the youngsters, I liked it too, it was my first concert, and I was 15 years old. Later I attended another gig, during the Alquin reunion tour, at the Symforce festival in Tilburg (R.I.P. John Bollenberg) and I even spoke with the band members. Nowadays I still appreciate Alquin their unique progressive sound of many different styles, performed by good musicians and an excellent singer.

On this comprehensive CD-compilation (60+ minutes, I only miss the epic The Dance) you can enjoy the tasteful and varied Alquin sound from their four studio-albums (recorded between 1972 and 1976), my highlights.

Wheelchair Groupie : A catchy and dynamic rhythm, strong and inspired vocals and great interplay between the powerful Hammond and fiery electric guitar. In the second part saxophone and a screaming wah-wah guitar solo, great atmosphere! This was a single and could be heard often on the radio, and wow, what a rock and roll title!

Fool In The Mirror : A slow rhythm with intense saxophone and lush Hammond, then a swinging rhythm, a bit funky with brass and strong vocals by Michel van Dijk, an excellent singer. Next the music shifts between parts with vocals, and with instrumental interludes (like jams) featuring pleasant interplay by the guitar, keyboards and brass, showcasing the unique and eclectic Alquin sound.

Convicts Of The Air : A slow rhythm with a wonderful Steely Dan-like guitar sound, dreamy vocals and a tight beat.

Revolution's Eve : A swinging rhythm with strong vocals, and lots of soli, on saxophone, guitar, flute and especially the swirling Hammond organ is exciting.

Soft-eyed Woman : This track features a very moving electric guitar solo (in a bluesy atmosphere, with subtle flageolets), embellished with dreamy organ and delicate flute play, goose bumps. The intense and bluesy guitar sound reminds me of Andy Latimer and David Gilmour, but also Snowy White comes to my mind.

Finally the epic Mountain Queen (around 15 minutes) : It starts with a mighty Hammond sound, then a tight mid-tempo beat with fiery guitar leads. Next a mellow atmosphere with flute, twanging guitar and dreamy vocals, gradually the sound turns into more lush and dynamic, fuelled by the omnipresent Hammond organ, the fiery guitar leads return, the powerful ryhtym-section does a good job. Halfway a break with a swinging rhythm, embellished with brass and wah wah guitar. Back to a slow rhythm with dreamy vocals, twanging guitars, distorted electric piano and biting guitar runs. In the final part a powerful saxophone solo and funky electric piano, great interplay, concluded with soaring Hammond, dreamy vocals and slide guitar, evoking early Pink Floyd, so many musical faces that Alquin showcases in this artistic highlight.

If you want to experience that there is more good prog in the Netherlands than Kayak, Earth & Fire, Focus and Ekseption this is a band to discover, but you have to be up to their eclectic sound.

Gentle Giant Eclectic Prog

Review by TenYearsAfter

4 stars Underrated, overlooked, lost in the vaults ... how about Gentle Giant?

Gentle Giant is one of those prog bands and artists (like King Crimson and Frank Zappa) that evoke strong opposite musical experiences to me. The one moment I am blown away by their jawdropping skills, great musical ideas and virtuosic interplay. But the other moment I can't stand their complexity, technical overtones, lack of emotion in the music and instruments like the trumpet and vibraphone. I think it is all about appreciating The Quirky Factor.

My first musical encounter with Gentle Giant was late 1977 when I watched a Gentle Giant concert on the Dutch television, that legendary 1974 concert, recorded in Belgium and broadcasted on the German television. I was very impressed, and soon bought this double live LP. Listening to Gentle Giant it's obvious that these musicians are classically trained, they play each at least 3 instruments, and on stage Gentle Giant is even more impressive! Their trademark is a mid-tempo, in a dynamic atmosphere with breathtaking interplay, the focus is often on the acrobatic vocals, and the distinctive clavinet that adds a bit funky element to the music. Another Gentle Giant trademark is the wide range of instruments, from a swirling Hammond solo or a wah-wah drenched guitar solo to flutes and violins, giving a classical flavour to the music.

Now about The Quirky Factor on this Gentle Giant live album.

A capella vocal harmonies, then a xylophone joins in On Reflection.

A capella vocal harmonies and xylophone interplay with distorted bass in the epic Excerpts From Octopus.

An avant-garde atmosphere with violin and vocals in So Sincere.

And a cheerful violin solo in a country climate in Breakdown in Brussels (aka Sweet Georgia Brown).

If you are up to these Quirky Factor elements Gentle Giant is a treat here, artistically this live album can compete with the best live of Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson and Pink Floyd, what an incredible virtuosic, dynamic and varied prog sound!

Steve Hackett Eclectic Prog

Review by siLLy puPPy
Special Collaborator PSIKE, JRF/Canterbury, P Metal, Eclectic

3 stars Although he's been out of Genesis for well over 47 years, STEVE HACKETT more than any other member of that band has retained the spirit of the progressive rock 70s and has done more as a solo artist to celebrate the prog years of Genesis than that band has ever done for itself. Add to that HACKETT has been quite prolific in his output since his debut "Voyage Of The Acolyte" all the way back in 1975 and despite nearly 50 years of releasing well over 30 albums, it seems there's no sign of him slowing down. And here in 2024 we find ourselves with another installment of the STEVE HACKETT universe with THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE.

After spending the last decade more or less revisiting his symphonic prog roots, THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE takes on a different stylistic approach which is more varied and more theatrical with touches of hard rock, flamenco and jazz mixed in with the usual symphonic prog and classically tinged guitar magic that HACKETT has been cranking out for almost five decades. As a legend in the world of prog, HACKETT now has the luxury to record at his own leisure and finds an army of supporting musicians to assist him on this one including Roger King (keyboards, programming and orchestral arrangements), Rob Townsend (sax), Jonas Reingold (bass), Nad Sylvan (vocals), Craig Blundell (drums) and Amanda Lehmann on vocals. Nick D'Virgilio and Hugo Degenhardt return as the percussionists with Benedict Fenner on keyboards.

The album title gives a hint of what to expect with this one. It truly is an eclectic work that doesn't really fit into any particular categorization. The CIRCUS really has come to town and the NIGHTWHALE is ready to deliver a great show, STEVE HACKETT style. Supposedly a concept album of some sort (well aren't ALL prog albums these days?!!!), i honestly am not sure what the theme really is and it doesn't really matter too much since it's the music that counts. STEVE delivers a wide array of sounds and styles throughout this run of 13 tracks with his outstanding guitar and mandolin playing heard all throughout. At 74, HACKETT may not be breaking any new ground on this one but he certainly holds his own and crafts catchy compositions that showcase some nice production and diversity.

The album features plenty of slow burners such as the tender ballad "Ghost Moon And Living Love" as well as more upbeat rockers such as "Get Me Out." The mandolin-rich "Circo Inferno" with its Arabian musical scales takes you for a journey east bound only with some hard rock outbursts and a sizzling sax solo. "Breakout" jumps into an unexpected heavy metal style with blistering guitar workouts and delectable lead guitars which demonstrates that HACKETT has lost none of his guitar playing mojo over the years. "All At Sea" offers yet another surprise with an ambient synthesized abstractness with a few guitar tricks thrown in and basically serves as an intro for "Into The Nightwhale" which remains dreamy and laid back never really shaking the ambient backing.

THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE demonstrates quite clearly that STEVE HACKETT is still alive and going strong and its filled with some really enjoyable music but like the majority of his output he simply fails to take the extra steps necessary to offer something truly compelling that will beckon return visits. In fact he seems on simply recycling various experiments that he's been cranking out his entire career. For true fans this album won't disappoint at all but if you're seeking something comparable to his debut or "Spectral Mornings" then you won't find that consistency here. HACKETT suffers from the age old problem of quantity over quality and most of his albums reflect that. While he never delivers an unlistenable product, very few of them deliver something revolutionary or applicable to the modern day. A decent album but not an outstanding one either.

The Shadow - Vol 1
The Tronosonic Experience Eclectic Prog

Review by Mellotron Storm

— First review of this album —
4 stars THE TRONOSONIC EXPERIENCE were a four piece from Norway who played a powerful avant/jazz style of music with some incredible guitar, and on their 2017 debut they had Ivar from the Hedvig Mollestad Trio on drums. The bass player and leader of the band Per Harald Ottensen sadly passed away from a serious illness in February of 2022. This album "The Shadow Vol 1" and it's companion "The Shadow Vol 2" were taken from the live recordings the band did at Ocean Sound Recordings over four days just before Christmas in 2019. With Per getting seriously ill they held off releasing these until March of 2022 a month after his passing.

The two cds put together form one big piece of art. And thankyou Apollon Records for sending me these recordings. So we get this insane sax player and an equally off his rocker guitarist with those soundscapes and expressions. The guy makes a lot of noise. A new drummer who is very good and of course our leader Per on bass, he also adds electronics(as does the guitarist) and lap steel. And he's the composer of all but a couple of minutes.

The opener "Sheik Pt. I" is shown on the back cover as being 5:19 but it should be 9:19 making this a 34 1/2 minute recording. What keeps this record from being great in my opinion is the 8 1/2 minute "Totak" where we get a relaxing piece of music that trips along for too long. I mean it's a nice break perhaps from the chaos but we also get two short pieces that could have done that but they made the shortest of those the closer.

By the way "Sheik Pt. 1" is the opener and it's an awesome example along with the 7 1/2 minute "Golden Comet" at how powerful and relentless this band could be. The sax and guitar are outrageous at times plus the electronics and soundscapes give us some layers. KROKOFANT came to mind on "Golden Comet" and I have to mention "The Last Stand" that rounds out my top three as another blistering affair.

I feel they put the best stuff on "Vol 2" and I'm really looking forward to talking about it in a couple of weeks or so. This one is a very solid 4 stars just hold on to your hat.
