5 stars I agree that this album seems raw and that the (excellent) musicians of the group were unexperienced when they recorded this album, but...

This is in all terms an incredibly excellent album, for me at least it is. I wouldn't call it weird, only progressive, innovative or original. Maudlin of the Well is certainly a unique band, but in a good way entirely. The musicians are virtuous and the songwriting, though a bit unexperienced and raw, is creative and mostly complex, even the more memorable (the so-called poppy parts) are garnished with accompanying backing instruments with patterns quite well-structured (enjoyably-structured imo) and complex.

I for one don't think ''Leaving Your Body Map'' or ''Bath'' are superior to ''My Fruit...'', on the contraire, first I found this album even more enjoyable. Now I see that the latter two are in many ways better than this debut, but not in many ways. ''My Fruit...'' has it's own advantages and quite many even. This will be a hard-to-get-into album for many but the creative music here compansates the trouble of trying to get into this album (at least for me). For some reason, for myself, this album wasn't hard to get into and appreciateing it at all, the latter two albums needed a few more listens with more thought to the compositions. This one doesn't have so much of the atmospheric soundscapey more silent parts as the latter two but is experimental as a very experimental thing.

In conclusion this is a great album and belongs in the record-collection of many progressive experimental unique jazzy music fans. If these criteria are related to you, I suggest that you buy this album, if you can find it somewhere that is (quite rare this cd is). For me, this album is a masterpiece.
