5 stars In 1989 Dream Theater managed to perfectly merge progressive rock and metal on their debut album When Dream and Day Unite. I always consider this album by Dream Theater to be a masterpiece. I have heard the album many times over the years and it never gets old. The song writing here is just as good as anything on their later albums. I truly surprised to see the low rating for this album. Every song here is top tier progressive metal. My personal favorites are Fortune in Lies, The Ytse Jam, The Killing Hand, Light Fuse and Get Away, Afterlife and Only A Matter Of Time. But every song on the album is incredible and some of the best songs ever written. The vocals fit very well on this album thanks to Charlie. Top tier musicianship too. Overall you must hear this album if you haven't yet!
