Progressive Biography

Born July 14th, 1986.

I was born practically listening to music (though my favourites artists as a 5-year old were Jon Bon Jovi, Megadeth and Guns N' Roses; the things I got exposed to, really).

As a 10-year old I heard for the first time a band called Jethro Tull. The album was Benefit and was immediately haunted by the vinyl sound coming out of the old speakers. I was eager to find more antiques in my father's shelf and found lots of jazz recording which I still listen to today. My brother's friends via my brother himself have provided me some music from the prog giants, including Genesis, King Crimson, ELP and Uriah Heep. Strangely enough, I was the influenced one, while he didn't stray too much from heavy metal and black/dark/thrash/power or hair/glam metal.

I'm thankful of this site for allowing me to find more in prog-folk and symphonic, as well as more obscure jazz/rock fusion (one of my favourite genres).

I'm currently relearning music theory (after an 8-year hiatus) and practicing on flamenco and jazz guitar, as well as flute and alto sax. Meanwhile, I'm studying law at the "Universidad Central de Venezuela".

My top ten favourites prog artists/albums are:

-Genesis: Foxtrot.
-Jethro Tull: Heavy Horses.
-Renaissance: Scherehazade and Other Stories.
-Gentle Giant: Free Hand.
-Al Di Meola: Elegant Gypsy.
-Return To Forever: Where Have I Known You Before?.
-Bill Bruford: Feels Good To Me.
-Mahavishnu Orchestra: Birds Of Fire.
-Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Paco De Lucia: Friday Night In San Francisco.
-Odrareg: God's Garden.

My favourite non-prog bands and artists include (in no particular order): Jazz: Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Count Basie, Henry Mancini, Vince Guaraldi, Art Farmer, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Arturo Sandoval, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Benny Golson, Michael Brecker, Paquito D' Rivera, Paul Desmond , Joe Henderson, "Gato" Barbieri, Ron Carter, Jaco Pastorius, George Benson, Mike Stern, Frank Gambale, Fareed Haque, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Airto Moreira, Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Chuck Mangione, Hubert Laws, Quincy Jones, Flora Purim,, Milton Nascimento, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Brecker Brothers, Glenn Miller Orchestra, Spyro Gyra, Yellowjackets, Phil Woods and his European Rhythm Machine, Irakere. Flamenco Guitarists: Gerardo Nuņez, Paco De Lucia, Juan Martin, Tomatito, Manolo Sanlucar, Oscar Herrero, Paco Peņa. Classical composers: Bach, Mozart, Liszt, Bartok, Beethoven, Stravinsky, Mussorgsky, Profokiev, Albeniz, Rodrigo, Segovia, Williams, Vivaldi, etc. Other genres: Onda Nueva (Venezuelan's new wave folk music), Venezuelan Waltzes (from different regions), Celtic Folk, some Melodic Pop (like The Carpenters and hispanic singers like Joan Manuel Serrat and Nino Bravo, as well as Mecano and latin-american composers like Armando Manzanero)
