Progressive Biography

About me

I've been really interested in music since 2001 when I - as a child - received my first own CD, In Search of the Lost Chord by The Moody Blues. In 2003 I discovered old tapes of radio recordings in a cabinet and discovered the Pink Floyd as my all-time favourite band, which didn't change until now.

Since then my record collection has grown constantly in all kinds of directions, as well as my interest in actually making music. I love playing all sorts of instruments, but it's the keyboards and the bass guitar which I feel most coherent with.

Basically, I'm interested in several kinds of music which are emotionally captivating to me or authentic in any way. This includes progressive and art rock, some classical music, jazz fusion, folk, hip hop, post rock, electronic music, psychedelic and alternative rock - and intersections of these genres. Special topic of interest is music with a distinctly British flavor, which includes both the British and Celtic folk scene (and all of the rock fusion stuff derived from it) and the Canterbury type of jazz fusion. So that's where a huge part of my reviews might go.

A genre which I have considerable problems with is the so-called Neo Prog which in my opinion too often sticks more closely to strict conventions than the music which the early progressive rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s wanted to modify. Music needs certain formulas and genres, but they may and should be mixed and enhanced practically. A working song of three chords means a lot more to me than a formulaic exercising of weird intervals.

About my reviews...

In case you wonder why there are so many 4 and 5 star rating in my list... That's simply because I mostly review the albums I enjoy a lot. In fact an album must be consistently good - and necessarily excellent in parts - to even achieve 4 stars in my reviews.

To clarify things I decided to additionally rate every album with 'x' of 15 points. The 14 and 15 are reserved for exceptional albums which have stunned me more deeply than the big load of other (good) records. Please note that a good 3-star rating (9/15-10/15) means quite a lot to me - I wouldn't ever put any average album into this category!

Feel free to comment and criticise my reviews if there's some point which you do or don't object to, or if there's anything which is plain wrong. I'm always glad to get some feedback or something like that.

Best wishes,

Einsetumadur
