Progressive Biography

About me

I've been really interested in music since 2001 when I - as a child - received my first own CD, In Search of the Lost Chord by The Moody Blues. In 2003 I discovered old tapes of radio recordings in a cabinet and discovered the Pink Floyd as my all-time favourite band, which didn't really change until now.

Since then my record collection has grown constantly in all kinds of directions, as well as my interest in actually making music. I love playing all sorts of instruments, but it's the keyboards and the bass guitar which I feel most coherent with.

Basically, I'm interested in several kinds of music which are emotionally captivating to me or authentic in any way. This includes progressive and art rock, some classical music, jazz fusion, folk, hip hop, post rock, electronic music, psychedelic and alternative rock - and intersections of these genres. Special topic of interest is music with a distinctly British flavor, which includes both the British and Celtic folk scene (and all of the rock fusion stuff derived from it) and the Canterbury type of jazz fusion. So that's where a huge part of my reviews might go.

A genre which I have considerable problems with is the so-called Neo Prog which, in my opinion, too often sticks more closely to strict conventions than the music which the early progressive rock bands of the 1960s and 1970s wanted to modificate. Music needs certain formulas and genres, but they may and should be mixed and enhanced practically. A working song of three chords means a lot more to me than a formulaic exercising of weird intervals.

About my reviews...

1.) In case you wonder why there are so many 4 and 5 star rating in my list: that's simply because I mostly review the albums I enjoy most. Indeed, an album must be consistently good - and necessarily excellent in parts - to achieve more than 3 stars in my reviews.

2.) Having grown up in school with the German 'n'-of-15-points system, I decided to use this rating for the reviews too in order to clarify things a little bit.

3.) The 14/15 and 15/15 grades are dedicated exclusively to exceptional albums which have impressed me more deeply than most of the other records.

4.) Please note that the rating isn't linear in the 3-star-area. The mediocre and faulty stuff lingers around below the 8/15 mark. If an album achieves 9/15 or 10/15 points, however, it's likely to partly feature excellent material. I wouldn't ever put any average albums into this category!

5.) Please mind too that I, being a non-native speaker, update my reviews occasionally if in retrospect my English sounds clumsy to me.

Feel free to comment and criticise my reviews if there's some point which you object to (or appreciate), or if there's anything which is plain wrong. I'm always glad to get some feedback and adjust my reviews if something's not correct.
