Progressive Biography

It came as rather a surprise to me to know that I had been promoted to the estimable position of prog reviewer. I do enjoy listening to music very much and since coming to know about this site, I have been inspired to write my own opinions about albums that I add to my ever-growing CD collection.

I acquired as a gift a digital clock radio when I was about 10 or 11 and at first I tuned the radio to classical music because that's what I thought I should be listening to. But soon I turned the dial to other stations and found Vancouver's rock radio station. The first song that I remember hearing was "Day Tripper" by the Beatles. I began paying attention to popular music and by the end of 1982, I had my first cassette: a compilation album of the year's hits, including REO Speedwagon, Red Rider, Juice Newton, Hall & Oats, Prism, Rush, and more. In the following year, however, I was turned onto my first true musical love, AC/DC. Soon to follow was Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, and other hot metal bands of 1983.

Over the next few years I got into thrash metal, speed metal, black metal, and everything else metal. I discovered though that many of my favourite songs were longer and more complex compositions like some by Iron Maiden and Metallica. Of course I loved Queensryche. By junior high school I was into Deep Purple and Uriah Heep, and by high school I was interested in Pink Floyd, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Vanilla Fudge and many other proto-metal and proto-prog bands, eventually getting into the Moody Blues and Alan Parsons Project.

In the 1990's I explored Christian rock and metal as I attempted to follow for a time a Christian belief. Then I turned to Canadian rock and folk, discovering bands like The Tea Party, Spirit of the West, and Sloan and finally buying a Rush album(!). I met a Japanese girl when I was 25 and fell madly in love and decided to leave Canada and come to Japan. In preparation, I got into Japanese pop and rock. Once in Japan, however, I grew out of my fascination with Japanese indie bands and returned to Canadian bands and some of my old favourites.

Over the second half of the 2000's I got back into Deep Purple and tracked down many non-Purple albums which featured Deep Purple members. Unbeknownst to me, I was building up a prog collection with Dixie Dregs, Don Airey, Rainbow, and several others. At last, in the fall of 2010, I was suddenly bitten by the Rush bug and I scrambled to purchase every studio album of theirs. For six months I listened to almost nothing but Rush. That was followed by three months of nothing but Yes. Hence my name "Fragile" "(Farewell to)Kings". Reading reviews of Yes albums brought me again and again to Prog Archives. After a brief return to Bon Scott era AC/DC and Halford-fronted Judas Priest, I fell in love with Canada's Voivod, an old favourite from my thrash metal days. And then my prog journey really began.

Since 2012 I have been seeking out progressive rock artists and my CD collection has doubled. This site has been indispensable in introducing me to artists and albums old and new, classic and obscure. And thanks to all the great reviews I have read, I was inspired to contribute my own views, hopefully helping newcomers who, like me, came seeking information about bands and albums.

At the present (end of 2014), I have become a devout Devin Townsend / Strapping Young Lad fan. Yet my Amazon shopping cart has a few dozen other albums on standby. I intend to continue my journey through the proglands in the years to come. And I look forward to reading reviews, writing reviews, and exchanging messages with other members and reviewers. Long live progressive music and all its sub-genres. It is a great joy to my life!
