I think some of the best Prog songs has come from non prog bands.. or bands that typically are not identified as being progressive in general.

My top Six in no particular order...

Funeral for a Friend - Elton John Band
Long Time - Boston
Beware of Darkness - George Harrison
Paradise by the Dashboard Light - Meatloaf
Introduction - Chicago
Love to Love You - UFO

What are your picks?

I remember liking this a lot at the time - atmospheric, lots of great guitar work and a song which had an intro that went for almost 3 minutes - it may not be prog but well...

Knowing how the "Progressive Rock" term is widely used these days here in Australia for the range of heavy/djent-inspired bands with generally throaty singers (Karnivool, Voyager, Caligulas Horse, Breaking Orbit etc), what I hear so far fits that genre pretty well. But I also hear more keyboards here than those bands, which is a nice change.

If you are looking for one of the categories used by PA, perhaps "Heavy Prog"?

Guys and gals:

Can we please hold back on the YouTube vids?
There are quite a few members with poor internet connections and all these vids simply f*ck it up for them, unless they have the patience to wait a year for the page to load.

Please consider the amount of vids you post and check if the thread is already booming with them. If it is, then use links instead.

I really think this is one of the greatest Prog songs ever hands down by any artist prog or not.
I say that because it's the whole package conceptually, lyrically, arrangement, musically all working in unison as a great song should.

Can't beat those analog synths and keys either.

So much to ponder here.  It's an amazing capture with 6 camera angles, decent mix for what must have been an absolute nightmare production wise with all that chaos.  That in itself is almost a miracle.  This was a huge band, but this was also a risky venture for them with two new members going out in front of 200K + people, the biggest audience the band had ever performed in front of.  What Paice is doing on the one kick drum is impressive.  I just can't imagine the adrenalin going through their veins and pulling off a complex piece like this as tight as they did.

It always will be a kind of mistery to me why Steve Miller Band is not listed in the Prog Archives as a proto-prog act regarding SMB's very important first two albums from 1968  - Nick Logan in The illustrated New Musical Express Encyclopedia of Rock (released in 1976 / 1977, Salamander Books Ltd.)  called them "the hoarstones of progressive rock" -  and the songs as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGVOo_6nvhg" rel="nofollow - Song For Our Ancestors

I think some of the non prog bands have written some of the best prog, because the bigger rock bands became big because they had a greater ability to understand song crafting than many of the prog bands that focused more on chops and or just pursuing weirdness and experimental.

Riders on the Storm - The Doors
Don't fear the Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult

Achilles Last Stand -
In the Light - Led Zeppelin

Band on the Run
Maybe I'm Amazed - Wings

The prog songs by these bands often became some of their best know works.

Who was the most prog Beatle?

Japan's current metal scene (of the non-extreme kind) is chock full of shred-monsters with oodles of talent, but usually either go full-on speed power metal that makes Dragonforce sound like amateurs or throw in lot's of poppiness. Light Bringer is one of the best of the power metal bands combining aggression with poppish hooks, and sometimes they can bring in the prog influences big-time, such as this tune " http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ZVOeTPhgnQ" rel="nofollow - ARK ". Yes, the lyrics ar Japanese, but she's better than almost any prog metal singer out there talentwise and the band combines ridiculous virtuosity with this peculiar jubilent poppiness that seems almost regulated to Japan.

Some others:
Nazareth - Please Don't Judas Me
Die Kreuzen - Hide and Seek
Bauhaus "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything"

my favorite jazz-rock band of all time!!  Good thing I retired when I did.. this band was next on my list to brute force past the conversatives on the site that still think this is a PROG site.  Since when has J-R ever been prog.. is is progressive rock and so was this group.

Jazz fans are even more elitist than prog fan.. and jazz fans completely embraced this group.. jazz sites discuss this group understanding that underneath the 'blues' veneer... this group was Coltrane inspired rock.  As much or more so than any group.

Yuzo Koshiro is a famous video game music composer, but he's mainly known for music in the vein of EDM.

Although this song wasn't composed for a game, it was still made with an FM sound chip.

No need to run from me at least - 'It's a long way there' is a great song, a reminder of good mainstream music from the '70's and a reminder of how good these guys could be too, in particular stretching out there ona long song that must have been a buzz for them to play live. Makes me want to listen to some Doobie Brothers, some Steely Dan, some decidely non-"prog" bands there...

Boo! No need for that Kati!  You can keep sharing links I'm sure.

Here's one more of my favourite proggy songs from a non-prog artist in a very nice extended live pussformace, with a pianist who is not Patrick Moraz despite a resemblance:

No typo I guess, but I have zero recollection of posting thatLOL
What!???!!! was my first thought when I read it back just now.....and then suddenly remembered the blank space from Fridays, which I don't remember at all. Too much of the ol lager and snaps, and waaaaay to little to eat beforehand. I should've learned that by now. Never go out drinking on an empty stomach - especially if it entails hard liquor like snapsWacko
Woke up with the sound system on and this album in the cd player
I instinctively pushed play and was nearly blasted out of the room! My neighbours must truly hate me at the momentEmbarrassed
At least I'm moving away from Cappy Beefy, who usually is the one I reach for after a night out on the town.

"Halo of Flies" by Alice Cooper, definitely!

"This Kid's" by UFO, for the amazing 8-voice choir Mellotron played by Leo Lyons.

"Wherever I May Roam" by Metallica is another favorite of mine, great imagery & cool instrumentals.

Didn't Britney Spears cover Yes' I've Seen All Good People? She is who she is, but if she sang it, I'd love to hear what her handlers did to (for) it. Anyone else ever hear it. Was it any good?

There must be tons of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple songs, but a song that basically smashes punk and prog together is Fear's Camarillo. The time signatures and arpeggios are pretty adventurous, especially as punk goes:

This is a band from Ireland, stunning heartfelt song. The piano tunes and vocals especially, very real and heartfelt. If you can please give this a listen. I love this song, since 2011 I have replayed this over and over again, just played this again and got that same special feeling I got first time. A song that to date I cannot get enough of doesn't matter how many times I listen. HeartThumbs Up

LYRICS:
Forget About Me
I just can’t forget about you, the way you forgot about me.
How hard can this be?
I’m going out of my head,
This mess that you made, it don’t clean so easy.
Ch - Some days I can’t make it of my bed
Some days, I spend hours on the things that you said.
Over and over and over again
Something inside I just can’t defend
They say time heals everything, well, that’s just a lie
To help you get by
And I’m walking round in a daze but these lights never change
And the world has stopped turning
Ch – And some days I wonder just what I have done
I live every day, every day of my life, in a house not a home
Over and over and over again
Something inside I just can’t defend
They say time heals everything, well, that’s just a lie
To help you get by
I’m drinking whiskey all the time, it’s killing the pain
But then you’re sober again
Ch – And some days I wish I had never been born
I wish I could rip out this heart and the pain would be gone
Over and over and over again
Something inside I just can’t defend
But you forget about me,
Forget about me ............. xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Four excellent choices!  Since all of these are circa 1968-1976 (during the hey-day of the "classic" progressive rock arrival), it makes sense that these songs from non-prog bands brand a "progressive" sound to them...

This one is on one of my mixes and came up yesterday at the gym.  awesome work.

of course, he also had this one from the same album.  The albvum doesn't have much beyond the first song and those two tracks though
