4 stars Electronic counterpointing.

The main characteristic I find in this VON HAULSHOVEN, 2010, "Planet of the Northern Wind" deals directly with its intensity and focus that does not run dry for such an ambitious project (2 cds). On the contrary it is full of creative and attractive counterpointing figures which transfigure themselves by melody lines that grow from its own counterponting crossroads and as they progress new musical elements appear subtly, like human voice choruses or the very laid back electric guitar that comes and goes, as also Kraftwerk's like primitiveness that also makes a short debut, as some brief Tangerine Dream's references, alongside the more "Drone like and sometimes Dark ambients" with an added twist of full or minimal and sometimes almost empty backdrops.

All well thought and perfectly connected, by its song writing as to enrich the sonic experience to detours of different environments which balance themselves between some really "cosmic" compositions and others closer to home.

It withholds many contemporary electronic musical styles but in minimal dossages, so very true to "classical minimalism" in that regard as in some of its slight touches with it, in some compositions. It also dares to construct more "Classical" symphonic like moments along the way.

All in all it is detached but expansive "electronic music", as it is also "Cosmic" school, that even Rocks a bit in some places, as it is the same slow/mid paced intelligent Progressive Electronics. It touches by chance some Jazz like moments, but not enough to be an issue.

The real deal in fact, as mentioned above, is its restless but focused nature as its never ceasing creativeness and subtleness the same way. Add up to that its original musical language, that just by itself stands apart of the "common places" usually found in this Prog category.

****4.5 PA stars.
