4 stars Crimson by Edge of Sanity is an extreme prog metal classic. The sole 40 minute long song is quite an experience. Though Still rooted in Death Metal Crimson has more tranquill moments than any Edge of Sanity album before it. Dan uses his clean singing voice to a much greater extent. Don┤t expect mellow prog rock though, this album takes no prisoners.

A welcome addition to the bands sound is of course Mikael Akerfeldt ( Opeth, Bloodbath) who guests on Lead Guitar and the black metal sounding vocals on the album. This means that the guitar leads on Crimson are much better than what we have been used to on previous Edge of Sanity albums.

This is more a solo album for Dan Swan÷ really as the band at this time really didn┤t work much together. Dan wrote the whole Crimson song and made the theme. And I┤m sure that bringing in Mikael Akerfeldt wasn┤t Andreas Axelsson┤s idea.

Crimson has what it takes to rise above other Death Metal releases, as it is original and diverse. A really excellent and essential extreme prog metal album.

If you┤re interested in Edge of Sanity because of some of the other bands Dan plays in, start with Crimson. A BIG 4 star rating is deserved.
