2 stars I used to listen and love this compilation before I got into prog, and I stopped listening to it for a very long time when I started to get into heavier music (still before I got into prog). After all of this I became a progger, and I started looking around on this site, I saw that Styx was in prog-related, and I thought, oh I can kind of see that. They have some proggy moments. Then I heard one of the songs from the compilation playing at a ski resort that I was snowboarding with my prog-metal head brother a couple weeks ago, and we were both like uuuck, it's so... unbearingly... POP! How could we have ever enjoyed this? Then I heard another one there, today before getting on the lift actually, it was Come Sail Away, which I still sort of like in a way with it's good musical progression, though the pop factor still made me cringe, just a little. So I gave the whole compilation another listen. It is definitely a Greatest Hits, the poppiest of the pop sound of Styx, with the most progressive sounding song on it being Fooling Yourself with the great keyboard solo, thrown in with a few of their somewhat proggy hits. Now overall I don't mind Styx as much as many proggers seem to, but they certainly don't do it for me now that I'm more musically informed than I was back in the day, and I suppose I will never truly dislike the band or their music (for the most part). This had some okay songs on it, but overall you might as just buy their most progressive album (from what I hear it's Grand Illusion) rather than having to bear much of the pop-ballad muck on the compilation.
