1 stars I've purchased a couple of these critical rock review DVDs in my day, and they can often provide interesting analysis of certain songs or albums in fairly good detail. This particular release does not give such an analysis of the albums themselves. Much of the information on the DVD serves as more of a history lesson of Metallica, which is most likely of little use to a fan like myself who has been listening to the band for at least 10 years. Most of the criticism on the DVD is placed on the personalities of the band members as opposed to the music that they have made. When they do critique an album, the critics don't go into much more detail than saying things like the songs aren't too good or this isn't a metal album. Some of the people interviewed include Malcolm Dome, photographer Harald O, and various members of thrash band Heathen.

The main reason a fan would want to own this is for the brief interview segments with some of the band members, plus there is some professional shot footage of the band performing at Woodstock 94, on the Justice tour, and on Saturday Night Live. There is also some really low quality footage of the Hetfield/Ulrich/Burton/Mustaine lineup performing at The Stone from 1983. Much of the band footage mentioned can be found at a higher quality from other sources.

If you're an impulse shopper like myself and see this DVD on the shelf, keep walking. I'd give this a 1 in general, but this maybe of slightly higher value to a Metallica fan (1.5-2 stars) especially someone who is just getting into the band.
