Fat Bottom Girl
4 stars This is a strange album to me. Everything together weaves a series of songs that are at once beautiful and catchy. To be honest, I don't care for the female vocalists nearly as much, though. I much prefer the girl singing on the duet from The Crane Wife, and kind of think they should have gotten her to sing again. Also, the music can also be a bit noisy for my tastes, with that electric guitar screeching whenever "The Queen" shows up, but I guess I understand its thematic import. A lot about this album makes it a bit too weird for me- I guess even though I can get into things like "The Lord of the Rings," hearing fairytales in music isn't quite my thing. All that said, this is still a great album for many reasons, not the least of which is the acoustic guitar work, and the male vocals are still top-notch. That last song is beautiful though, almost country, and a good contrast to the rest of the album. I believe it is one of those creative efforts that takes a little time to grow (though I've heard some say they like it immediately). Whatever the case, fans of the band (and fairytales) should have this.
