4 stars 8th April, 2021: Toby Driver - They Are the Shield (art rock, 2018)

Most of my memories with this album really apply to its preceding live album, which I listened to a fair bit duing a rather intense period of my life in 2017 - the kind of period that etches any music listened within it permanently to your soul. This is a beautifully barren album, but it doesn't quite hold the same memories that its live counterpart does. I do love how Toby expanded on the expansive, meditative singer/songwriter style on Madonnawhore to a more chamber-oriented and minimalist approach, but like on that record, it often feels deliberately obscure in its vocal wanderings, never quite settling on a melody. But still, some of these songs remind me of a truly fascinating time in my life, and for that I guess I'll always have a sort of fondness towards it.
