2 stars Shooting high and aiming low... and striking low as a consequence. Can't think of a better way to describe 'Big Generator'. Yes were obviously trying to strike the gold for the second time in a row. Indeed, Jon Anderson has admitted in an interview somewhere around 2010. Well, for my money, the album is not as terrible as it is usually presented to be. It is obviously paler than all that came before it. The band was embracing the 80s pop rock thing and this really did not end well. Subsequently, some members would leave and an even stranger period in the band's history would come fore. The important thing is that there are many flaws to this record. For example, the title track that sounds like a re-worked version of 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' but less crunchy, or the super stale 'Love Will Find a Way'. Another issue I have with 'Big Generator' is that it sounds like an awful Toto record, with many hints at different things along the ride but the songs seem not to go anywhere at all. I would really not recommend this album to anyone trying to get into Yes, or exploring their catalogue.
