3 stars After the rather disappointing 'Battalions of Fear', Blind Guardian stepped up their game to release a classic power metal album in 'Follow the Blind'.

Whilst the band still have a long way to go until finding their true, defining style, this is a good metal album and definitely a step in the right direction for Blind Guardian, who are starting to become more and more confident as they lay the foundations of their own sound

The main highlight of this album has to be 'Banished from Sanctuary' which has become one of the bands live favourites. Also a guest appearance by Kai Hansen (of Helloween/Gamma Ray fame) is welcome, yet also further distinguishes this as a power metal album, nothing more.

The musicianship on this album is okay, but really isn't too impressive compared to most other bands of the same genre, although Hansi Kursh's voice is always a pleasure to listen to, despite not quite reaching its full maturity yet; the vocal melodies are nowhere near as impressive or as 'fun' as later albums.

This isn't a bad album, but it definitely has its setbacks. Some of the songs can seem a bit bland at times. Not that they're terribly bad, but remember this is a Power Metal album from the 80's/early 90's, so at times the music may seem a bit cheesy and difficult to tolerate.

With that said though, this is still a good album to get if you like Blind Guardian, but much like their debut, you'd probably regret paying too much for it.
