Beautiful Scarlet
3 stars Some people seem to see this album as a super different album compared to the previous albums which I disagree with. The only different song is Nothing At All which is actually not that odd for Caravan to include as Live the band included covers of Jazz Standards that resemble this. Other then that song the music here is still classic Caravan. That being said si find less high points on this album then on their prior two albums.Waterloo Lily opens the song and is about a prostitute. This song is alright, kind of in the vein of Golf Girl but less good, still an acceptable opener.

Nothing At All is a jazzier song that features a really repetitive bassline that briefly vanishes only to return. Of Caravans suites I'd say this is one of their worst, only surpassed in mediocrity by With An Ear To The Ground We Can Make It.

Songs And Signs is my favourite of the short songs, it's much softer and has a nice staccato delivery. (Should have a different name I barely notice when they sing the title)

Aristocracy is a track with a neat name that just kind of blends into the background. The song is an upbeat poppy Pye Hastings tune, AKA the average Caravan song.

The Love In Your Eye is the good suite on the album. It opens with orchestra that proceed to line the intro along with Hastings singing. The buildup on this one is good, when the songs heads into the instrumentals and returns to the vocals everything just pops. I don't think this song is any weaker then the other celebrated Caravan suites. Finally, the e piano/orchestra give the song its own identity and where good decisions.

The World Is Yours is just too happy, particularly on the chorus of cringe "And I Love You, Never Loved Someone Like I do etc". A somewhat weak closing song that strikes me as padding because The Love In Your Eye is not a sidelong.

Overall this album doesn't have any bad songs but a lot more average songs. I think at this point in time Caravan had found a formula and pretty much chunked this album out. While there aren't many things dragging the album down, very little drags it up aside from the shortish The Love In Your Eye.
