5 stars Rubycon continues the scary trip of Phaedra and contains entrancing sequencing work that even surpasses its predecessor.

The album starts very strong with haunting opening choirs, 6 minutes of dissonant ambience that builds the tension till it gets released by a very strong sequencer progression. I decidedly put those seemingly contradictory words next to each other. Tangerine Dream uses moog sequencers as a basis for their music, but unlike later techno that started with Kraftwerk, the sequences keep constantly changing, growing and evolving from one theme to another. That is what makes their music progressive, and not just electronic.

The second part repeats the same formula: 7 minutes of dissonant sound followed by a moog sequence. The intro isn't really captivating, but the sequence that follows is one of the most beautiful they have ever made. It is very similar to what would appear on the 1975 live album Ricochet.

At 35 minutes and a few weaker sections, this album is really very short. Some extra material in the vein of what appeared on Froese's solo album Epsilon in Malysian Pale could have turned this one into another gold platter. 4 desolate galaxies.
