3 stars This is a huge step forward since Savatage's debut, but the mixture of great and average songs only give it three stars.

Every aspect of this album is a lot more mature than on the bands previous two releases, the musicianship is a lot better and a lot tighter, the production has been given a massive boost, and the compositions are generally a lot more polished. Unfortunately what gives 'Power of the Night' three stars is that the great songs are really fantastic, but the others are nothing more than good-but-forgettable to be honest.

The most obvious gem here is the title track. Easily one of the bands best songs, and arguably one of the most underrated Metal tracks I've ever heard. And whilst other tracks such as 'Warriors', 'Hard For Love' and 'Unusual' are a great sign that better things are yet to come, most of the other tracks are still nothing more than standard 80's Heavy Metal, only with better production.

If you're a fan of the band then no doubt 'Power of the Night' belongs in your collection, otherwise it's probably not anything you'll lose sleep over, and the best track on the record can easily be obtained on any Savatage compilation album anyway.
