3 stars My previous experience with this interesting band comes from their excellent 2006 release The Crane Wife. After enjoying that disc, I decided to take a closer look at this group starting with this album. I find myself really, really liking a lot of their music, but I find some of it just doesn't move me, and even bores me at times. The top, by far, tracks here are "The Infanta", "We Both Go Down Together", "Eli, the Barrow Boy", and "16 Military Wives", the rip- roarin' concert favorite "Mariners Revenge Song", and the final track "Of Angels and Angles". These 6 tracks are excellent, and represent some of the best work I have heard by The Decemberists. However, the rest of the tracks bore me, especially the longer piece- "The Bagman's Gambit", which I have tried (I really have) to like but to no avail. Alas, with 6 out of 11 great songs, I rate this a 3 1/2 (3 on Prog Archives scale). Good, but not as good as The Crane WIfe.
