2 stars And so the decline was finally blatant and evident. The decline of Styx began to show up a little in the previous album, PIECES OF EIGHT, but on CORNERSTONE the roof finally caved in for good. Only "Boat on the River" keeps this from being a complete dud. The rest is either weak "Never Say Never", dull "First Time", derivitive "LIghts", or just plain crud like "Babe". This album was never upgraded to CD form in my collection and never will be. The best of Styx remains GRAND ILLUSION and EQUINOX. The worst of Styx remains KILROY WAS HERE and PARADISE THEATER. CORNERSTONE lies somewhere just above those latter 2 efforts, but just barely. While Styx was never really very progressive to begin with, at least there were some moments. Those moments are completely absent here. 2 stars.
