3 stars Shadow Gallery's second album 'Carved in Stone' is a step up from the band's debut as they really start to establish themselves as one of Progressive Metals finest. Although this album is far from a masterpiece, it is certainly a great record that has laid down the blueprint for following albums.

There are two main reasons why I don't enjoy this effort as much as later ones: There are many 'interludes', which don't really progress the album in any way, they just make things seem more cluttered, and the main focus of the album, 'Ghost Ship' should have been awesome, but sadly rather than a proper 20 minute epic, the track is broken down into smaller pieces, and all the best bits last for barely a minute.

In this case, parts such as 'The Gathering the Night Before', 'Approaching Storm' and 'Storm' are fantastic pieces, but each barely lasts a couple of minutes, making it seem kind of pointless in the first place.

As for the other songs, we have 'Cliffhanger', 'Deeper than Life', Alaska' and my favourite from this record, 'Crystalline Dream'. These are all good songs, that definitely make this album worth getting, but when compared to some of Shadow Gallery's later tracks, they seem fairly unimportant. Except 'Crystalline Dream' which is a great song that truly makes this album worthwhile.

As expected, the musicianship is spectacular, and the vocals are beautifully unmatched, but overall this album could only be described as good. It definitely belongs in the collection of any Shadow Gallery fan, and other Prog Metal fans may get more out of it than I did, so it's still worth checking out.
