Life in an Infinite Loop is the debut release from Austrian post-rock outfit Cinématique. At this late stage in the game it can be hard to gain recognition by playing, what is arguably, a dying style. Some will try and add a twist or two, make it their own, whilst others will focus on writing material of the highest quality in order to stand out from the crowd. This album is an example of the latter as the sound is quintessential post-rock, with sparse vocals are reminiscent of Sigur Ros, lower pitched, but with the same drowsy effect.

Life in an Infinite Loop has eight tracks, each between 5 and 11 minutes long, and a total running time of just over an hour. Whilst some are excellent, some are merely OK, but the main event has got to be the closing track, Rewind Yourself Completely. It starts off as a very standard affair, but then moves into an intriguing 'shuffling' section, before building up to the incredibly grandiose finale which live long in the memory. Other stand-out tracks include Oceanic Has Drowned and The Flight of Icarus 1 That Flew Through a Thunderstorm on its Way Back to Earth, which pays tribute to the 2007 film "Sunshine".

The only real downfall of Life in an Infinite Loop is it's inconsistent quality. Some songs feel like they were meticulously crafted whilst others sounds like they were knocked together in a couple minutes. It's available as a free download from Cinematique's bandcamp page, if you like it, then make a donation through the same page, if not, at least you'll have a stunning piece of ultrachromatic artwork to brighten your music collection.

The Verdict: An engaging debut that has become a regular on my playlist. I look forward to see what comes next.
