4 stars 'Fabulous Drop' is arguably Curlew's finest effort. Mississippi-born George Cartwright started Curlew after his relocation to NYC. Curlew quickly got a lot of recognition in the downtown jazz scene &, while retaining his own delta/dixie approach to his instrument, Cartwright & co. adopted many of the elements of the NYC downtown jazz scene. The rhythm section is very groove-oriented & funky, while Cartwright's playing is more in the vein of Albert Ayler meets John Zorn. The dual guitar playing of Williams & Cochrane come as a noisy assault that is not unlike the early stylings of Fred Frith. This album comes highly recommended to fans of Naked City & early Henry Cow.
