4 stars FOAM means Fairly Original And Meditative ...

For this live performance VESPERO consists of nearly the same line-up which produced 'Rito' (only missing the violin). 'FOAM' was recorded 2006 at their hometown situated in the south west of Russia. Only one song is played from the studio album and all the other tracks are new for me. That's a comfortable starting position I would say. One noticable difference is the lack of drums here. The band now sets the priority on an intensive meditative trance mood supported by two percussion players. This is combined with a native guitar style and exceptional female vocals - quite more mellow and not that diversified as 'Rito' in the whole.

But this is not a problem at all. On the other hand VESPERO attracts and wraps up the listener in a special way with the songs which is really fascinating. Alexander Kuzovlev's guitar is striking - the most psychedelic element of the band - alternating between an usual and a native style with an eastern touch - supported by the use of loops. That's perfectly demonstrated within the opener Overture whereas the rest of the band is serving the trance basis. With Instruments Of The Roads the synthesizer gets a more important role, at first with a Tangerine Dream alike intro. And then Natalya Tjurina appears for the first time with her wonderful voice which is really a special attraction of the band.

Figures differs with a funky bass line plus a dub oriented guitar style with echoes. Tjurina reaches the top with her extraordinary mode of expression - not the longest track but a highlight of the gig by all means. The absolutely relaxed Foam with eleven minutes is like accompanying a dream - not a nightmare of course. All instruments are meandering equivalently getting spaced out and a little bit weird later. Vocals are prominent once again and Arkady Fedotov proves his flute skills. Skat - this one is known from 'Rito' - opens very melancholic and continues with excellently corresponding guitar and bass work - very short and my next favourite though. Immediately followed by Float where we unfortunately have already arrived the closing song. Similar to the first track the guitar part shines with much variety later dominated by a strong eastern variant which sounds near to a turkish Saz.

An amazing album made by cheerful musicians - with 45 minutes total length not very extended especially for a live recording but no time is wasted for any audience action like applause. Recommended to fans of spacey, trippy and trance drenched music who want to lay back and meditate.
