4 stars "A Grey Sigh In A Flower Husk" is a split EP by US experimental/sludge metal acts Baroness and Unpersons. The album/ EP was released in June 2007 through At a Loss Recordings. All songs are exclusively featured on this release. I was only familiar with Baroness music before listening to this split and but learning about Unpersons has been a nice surprise too. I like split releases. Sometimes you get some really nice surprises.

There are six tracks on the split. The first two are Baroness songs and the last four are Unpersons songs. The split starts with "Teiresias" which is a great song by Baroness. Certainly their strongest song up until then (this split was released before the debut album "Red Album (2008)"). The song is very much in the vein of how Mastodon sounds and some people might feel that this is too much of a ripp-off. I find the song very enjoyable though. "Cavite" is slower and more post metal like and actually sounds like something Isis could have done for their "Oceanic (2002)" album. At 12:11 minutes itīs the longest song on the EP but itīs a strong track. Both Baroness tracks live up to my expectations and even though I still feel that they struggle to find a personal style their music is so strong that my issues with their lack of an original sound sligthly fade.

Unpersons music was completely unknown to me but what a positive surprise Iīve been given. Their music has some of the same elements as the music of Baroness but ultimately comes out very different. While Baroness vocals are raw and shouting, which is pretty typical for the genre, the vocals by the lead singer in Unpersons are completely insane. Imagine a schizophrenic lunatic fixated by a straitjacket in a rubber cell late at night at the institution for the criminally insane shouting, spitting and talking to himself. A suiting description for the vocals on these four tracks. I love it but I can imagine that this is an aquired taste. The music is very interesting too. Raw sludgy and rather simple metal/ hardcore but experimental enough to suit my taste.

The musicianship in both bands is excellent.

The Baroness songs are well produced and the same can be said about the Unpersons songs even though the level of production is not as high as on the Baroness tracks.

Be sure to check out and get lost in the beautiful cover artwork created by Baroness vocalist/ guitarist John Baizley.

"A Grey Sigh In A Flower Husk" is an excellent split EP with great contributions from both bands involved. 4 stars are not a star too much.
