4 stars All-star Doom/Post-Metal band have put out one of the best albums of the last year; just believe me, I've listened to almost 300 LPs and EPs released in 2009, and this one is in my Top-10! Al Cisneros (SLEEP, OM) on vocals and bass, Wino (SAINT VITUS, SPIRIT CARAVAN) and Scott Kelly (NEUROSIS) both on vocals and guitars and Dale Crover (MELVINS) on drums have managed not only to preserve their own unique signature styles but also blend them into a brand new sound! At first it seems that you're listening to a musical puzzle: here, this is Al's chanting groove, this is sludgy Scott's part, and this one was surely written by Wino...but when you let yourself be taken by their music, you really feel them as a BAND, not just four personalities. With Al's words about upcoming second album this year it seems that they're really becoming THE band, and I hope the next one will be even better than this debut effort! Highly recommended!!!

Best tracks: "Solar Benediction", "Pyramid of the Moon", "Science of Anger"

4 stars Shrinebuilder is the debut full-length studio album by American experimental/ sludgy doom metal act Shrinebuilder. Shrinebuilder is a kind of supergroup consisting of Scott "Wino" Weinrich ( Place of Skulls, Saint Vitus, Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, The Obsessed, Victor Griffin, Solace, Shine, Paul Chain) on guitars and vocals, Scott Kelly ( Blood & Time, Neurosis, Tribes of Neurot) on guitar and vocals, Al Cisneros ( Asbestos Death, Om, The Sabians, Sleep) on bass and vocals and Dale Crover ( Fantômas, Fecal Matter, Melvins, Nirvana, Porn) on drums. With prolific names like these in the lineup the expectations for what this group could accomplish have been very high. The kind of hype that surrounds a project like this is magical for many fans and the danger of being let down is always an unpleasant risk. When the magic works though it usually works wonders and for me Shrinebuilder is definitely closer to working wonders than disappointing.

The mix of Neurosis like post metal parts and the more sludgy old school doom metal parts ( think seventies Black Sabbath) works pretty well for the most part on the album. The three vocalists work well together and their different styles suit the music well. The album is filled with heavy riffs but they are actually quite varied and the songs are generally very strong. There are enough different parts in each song to keep me interested throughout. The songs are not perfect and some of the transitions between parts don´t work as well as they could, but it´s not something that truly annoys me. Just a slight distraction in an otherwise excellent picture.

The production is quite organic. Especially the drums sound like "real" drums.

Shrinebuilder is a very good release by Shrinebuilder and I´m sure that with a bit more time the compositions could have been even better ( according to an interview I read with the band they only rehearshed once the night before they recorded the album. The songs were written during breaks from their day-time jobs in their "real" bands), but my rating is still a 3.5 - 4 star rating. A very enjoyable album.

3 stars In essence, I would describe Shrinebuilder's debut as heavier Led Zeppelin or Ozzy Osbourne with deep vocals and mild growling- the overall sound isn't quite metal, just brooding and dense hard rock. I don't particularly care for the overall muffled sound. A brusque project, it is very good but unoriginal.

"Solar Benediction" A heavy riff leads this thick rock excursion. The slowest-paced part of the track is the best, I think, as it combines intelligent, almost Alice in Chains-like riffs on bass and drums with multiple guitars wailing over them.

"Pyramid of the Moon" After a biting introduction, the band tapers off for a vocal section, sang deeply over a muggy, saturated guitar tone and laidback rhythm section. There are haunting and later monotonous vocals, which tend to be effective in building tension. Unfortunately, Shrinebuilder does nothing with that pent-up tension.

"Blind for All to See" This one begins with a funky bass groove and solid drumming. The vocals are low and dark. It mostly maintains the same pace. The only thing I really don't care for is the guitar tone.

"The Architect" Relying mostly on their formulaic sound, Shrinebuilder does offer intriguing and fuzzy guitar harmonies on "The Architect." A swampy bass riff unexpectedly concludes the song.

"Science of Anger" Dual buzzing-and-screeching guitars open the final piece. It relies on a heavy riff and barked vocals. The growling is adolescent-sounding (how often is it not?), but overall, I hear some modern Ozzy Osbourne influence through this somewhat dissonant and moody rocker. Not bad, although it overstays its welcome.
