PROG REVIEWER
4 stars Album of John Scofield put on the market in 1998. Expressing of the music character by the "A Go Go" former had already been established as definite existence of one and exchanged the music character that he was doing and the character with various musicians.

Especially, the music character that John Scofield expressed it might have given the impression divided further on the boundary of the time of 2000 to the listener and the fan. It appeared remarkably in the remark of John Scofield to say nothing of it.

Bump style and straight ahead Jazz

John Scofield is said that these two ideas will not have come to a rupture by individual because it is done as an expression of same man. However, the relation to "Pat Metheny" often mentioned in the item of Jazz might take the methodology with which individuality overflows further as an expression each other method at this time. It is said that John Scofield had especially held the development of an original expression and machine parts of course as a work group in the Verve label at the time of 1996.

John Scofield might especially have the flow that establishment in the dichotomization of a bump style and straight ahead Jazz is established as an activity after 2000. Flow to which route of Jazz Funk in "Bump" to announce in 2000 was done by original interpretation. And, it leaps further by "Uberjam" to announce in 2002. An original expression has been evolved further in the expression in "Up All Night" to announce on the other hand in 2003.

Situation of nomination of contemporary jazz album in Grammy Award in fiscal year 2002 actually to section. It might have led to the contribution to Jam Band Scene surely established from the bump style further. It was true that the fan in genres other than Jazz actually and the name of John Scofield infiltrated by this style.

It actually makes remarks on John Scofield at this time.

「I feel that straight ahead jazz is made good recently. There are still a possibility and room for the expression. 」

This remark might be constructed the style that is two differentiations as one the world, agree as commuting each other, and advanced like seem being natural. The one shape and result are expressed by this album.

Meeting of John Scofield and Steve Swallow goes back to 1981. At that time, John Scofield that unites drum player's Adam Nassbaum and Trio has left two live albums in the period. Then, it is said that Steve Swallow gave counseling to John Scofield that plays leader's role for the first time. The advice was advice said that it was necessary to make an original more work.

It was thought that John Scofield had to receive the enlightenment and to do the role as the composer after that. John Scofield would participate in the group of Miles Davis and the quality of Solo Album be always indeed fine quality as the expression since it took an active part.

The flexibility of Trio in this album is indeed remarkable in this album. Some of the element are not the exaggerations to say the contribution by Bill Stewart. It might completely have the ability of Bill Stewart in another dimension if it compares it with the performance of Adam Nussbaum that should be called the direct line of Elvin Jones. Accurate part of thorough rhythm. However, construction of the rhythm never mechanical and the area of the idea satisfactorily surely demonstrate the ability in this Trio. This trio is being exactly composed by the member who exceeds the generation. And, it is necessary to be caught as a flow of the kind with the expression that John Scofield did and the music character that union and establishment are given by this album.
