SFiltrom biography
SFILTROM is a young Slovenian progressive rock band formed in 1995. They started as a high school band - like early GENESIS. The name SFILTROM means "WithFilter". They are acquainted with classic prog groups but they don't want to have any musical models because they want to stay as original as possible. They are trying to get the most of rock framework but they are also open to a lot of different kinds of music. The closest comparison to their melancholic symphonic style would be LANDBERK at their best. Nevertheless SFILTROM sound different because of the female lead singer and occasional voyage in Balkan, oriental, space rock and other musical territories. Their finest hour was in May 2000 when they successfully appeared on a big JETHRO TULL concert as the starting group. The guitarist (Bostjan Narat) and the current drummer (Robert Rebolj) are also members of a progressive folk rock band KATALENA that plays old Slovenian folk songs in a modern and progressive way.

In the year 2000 they released their debut "Otroci bogov" (transl. "The Children of Gods"). During the recording of this album their drummer left and they finished the album with the new drummer - Robert Rebolj. This is a strong debut with alternating between dreamy soundscapes and heavier sections. It was also used as a movie soundtrack. Recommended! The next album "Sfiltrom" was released in 2003. The singer Breda left the band. She was replaced by Diana Filipovic. Later they also got a new bass player - Peter Kocan. The band matured and the sound gained a more modern production. Thus the album sounds more progressive and is highly recommended as a introduction to this group for prog fans!

4 stars SFILTROM is one of the few modern progressive groups from Slovenia and "Otroci bogov" is their debut album. Their style is modern symphonic rock sometimes bordering on neo- prog. Don't expect any cheap MARILLION cloning - SFILTROM sound unique. The melancholic mood reminds me only of LANDBERK sometimes. I'm going to describe some standout tracks."Caroben vecer" is an atmospheric piece with spacey synth of Marko Klemencic and nice vocal melody sung by Breda Bozic. Jaka Jarc delivers some tasty melodic bass soloing here. I also like the drumming of Robert Rebolj ranging from tribal 7/8 to more laid-back rhythms. Prominent is also interesting electric guitar-playing of Bostjan Narat especially in the song's intro. Every musician is an essential part of the band's sound. "In memoriam" is another good song. "V znamenju zmaja" is a strange Eastern tinged piece. The guitarist shines in this song. The drumming is also great here. There are a lot of strange mood and rhythm changes. Near the end one can hear also a funny vocal intermezzo. "Kratke sanje v rdecem" is a short classically influenced piece with baroque feel and instrumentation. It serves as the intro to next track "Bajkalsko jezero". This is an energetic song written by the keyboardist. "Barve" is a chanson with walking bass, piano and jazzy guitar. "Opus 1 and 2" is a two part piece letting the musicians to stretch out. Only short vocal parts here. "Gozdovi" has a memorable vocal melody. This song also had a very sucessful video. Last track "Otroci bogov" has a strong tribal ritual feel similar to Amon Düül but with modern sound. Especially the ending sounds psychedelic. A very diverse album to say the least. Recommended together with their even better eponymous second album!
