Exhaust biography
EXHAUST is a seminal project of the Montréal avant-garde scene in Canada. Formed in the mid 90s as trio comprised of drummer Aidan GIRT (later a member of GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR and SET FIRE TO FLAMES), bassist and clarinetist Gordon KRIEGER (also a future member of SET FIRE TO FLAMES) and tape manipulator Mike ZABITSKY, the project was producing music later heavily augmented by remixing and post-processing. After building and consolidating a reputation with live performances, they fructified this peak by releasing their self-titled debut in 1998. Soon to be involved in other projects, the band members reunited in 2001 for a last tour and the recording of a second, final album.
The music of Exhaust comes from both a punk and minimalist DIY ethic, and delivers a hard to classify approach ranging from avant-garde, guitar-less post-rock with ideologically charged talking samples (also a later trademark of GY!BE) to noise and sound design or to modern electro. Sometimes abrasive, sometimes beautiful, their musical research is always interesting, and highly recommended to demanding tastes.
