Clay Withrow biography
CLAY WITHROW, multi-instrumentalist and founder of VANGOUGH, started the Clay Withrow Band during the summer of 2006 in Oklahoma City, USA. At the time he was finalising the recording of his solo debut album. Essentially, this band was the prequel of VANGOUGH. With the line up of Clay WITHROW (vocals, guitar), Will DAVIS (bass, backing vocals), Jason MAY (drums) and Narisa SUZUKI (keyboards) they recorded the only album under the CLAY WITHROW name entitled ''Dissonance Rising'' by Dissonance Rising Publishing / Records in 2007. The band played several shows in 2007, before WITHROW met Brandon Lopez and went on to form VANGOUGH.

WITHROW mentions a number of influences from different musical genres, such as GROVER WASHINGTON, JR., LIONEL RICHIE, THE FLOWER KINGS, DREAM THEATER, CHICAGO, GRANT KIRKHOPE, PAIN OF SALVATION and EVERGREY with the latter two having the highest impact on the progressive metal parts of the album.

Dissonance Rising
Clay Withrow Progressive Metal

Review by VOTOMS

3 stars This is the solo album from the Vangough's leader, Clay Withrow. This is progressive metal, without technical over the top riffage and speed. The melodies are focused on the keyboard (by Narisa Suzuki, a Japanese girl) and lyrics. Well, I'm not into Vangough. Never heard of their music, actually. But this album took a long time to work. At my first listen, I had nothing more than an average melodic slow metal, some kind of average progressive Katatonia. But I gave another chance to Dissonance Rising, and I felt pleased. I haven't this album here on my own, and sorry, I can't remember specific passages. But it worth, it's the kind of album that the more you listen, more you learn and like.
