Knitting by Twilight biography
KNITTING BY TWILIGHT is a progressive electronic band from the New England city of Providence. It was founded by John Orsi and Michael Watson in the spring of 1994 culminating in the self titled EP release in 1995. Orsi is a multi-instrumentalist and the primary composer that has been the only constant in the band throughout its existence. It was a lengthy time till the first album release but in 2008 "An Evening Out of Town" made its mark and was followed up with "Weathering" in 2012. It was released in an impressive six-panel package adorned with a full-size image of late 19th-century French artist Antoine Bouguereau's painting "Biblis".

Orsi has been involved over the years with other music projects such as INCANDESCENT SKY and HERD OF MERS, signed to his own label It's Twilight Time. The music of KNITTING BY TWILIGHT reflects the percussion skills of Orsi. He utilises a wide array of percussion instruments that create atmospheres from lulling gentle tranquil passages to ethereal dissonant textures. Orsi has a deft hand also on keyboards to generate evocative soundscapes. His music celebrates the emotional flux between weather and nature, that are used as metaphors for the trials and tribulations of life; from sparse musical minimalism to a cacophony of sound.

It is recommended for those who enjoy dreamy soundscapes, mood music or disquieting ambiance with an electronic edge, and for those who wish to explore the more experimental side of drumming, along the likes of Robert Fripp.

Review by Windhawk
Special Collaborator Honorary Collaborator

4 stars US outfit KNITTING BY TWILIGHT started out back in 1994, initially consisting of John Orsi and Michael Watson, the twosome using this artist moniker for material unsuitable for their other various endeavours. Dawson has since left this collaboration, but Orsi maintains it and uses it in the same manner still. "Weathering" is the most recent effort to be issued under this project name, and was released in 2011.

On "Weathering" Knitting By Twilight takes the listener out towards a rather unique musical landscape, where atmospheric textures, world music inspired rhythms and subtly dissonant elements combine into a form of instrumental electronic music that defies most normal genre conventions, rich in mood, occasionally rich in instrumental details too, and of a generally enthralling nature throughout. A production that should interest those fond of innovative music, especially if they find the notion of listening to what inspired musicians might do if they were given the task of transforming accessible new age music into something rather more challenging and intriguing one.

Thanks to Philippe Blache for the artist addition. and to AtomicCrimsonRush for the last updates
