Magic Muscle biography
With many musicians passing through over the years, MAGIC MUSCLE sometimes were more of a community than a band. Some like-minded fellows formed this outfit in Bristol/England around 1969/1970. The exceptional violin attendance by Simon House has always reflected a unique trademark. Core members right from the start also were Rod Goodway (guitar, vocals), Adrian Shaw (bass) and Kenny Wheeler on drums.

Their music means a mix of spacey journeys and blues rock expeditions featuring some US west coach touch, therefore in some way similar to the Welsh Man band. In 1972 they've earned themselves the nickname 'Bastard Sons Of Hawkwind' while touring with Dave Brocks & Co on their Space Ritual tour. Some tracks from this episode are presented on 'Laughs & Thrills' - a collection of live recordings which was finally released in 1991. The year 1973 saw them gigging with the Pink Fairies and they also were joined by guitarist John Perry for a while. When Goodway had to enter the hospital MAGIC MUSCLE was put on ice for the first time.

It was 1987 when the band returned to the scene due to some rising interest in recording activities of ex-members connected with Hawkwind. Goodway undertook the compilation of the album 'The Pipe, The Roar, The Grid' released in 1988 which features 1970-1973 archive recordings. The band was reformed then, comprising guitarist Huw Gower, Adrian Shaw, Simon House and drummer Twink. Their debut concert was held on 1 August, released as 'One Hundred Miles Below' in 1989.

In 1991 MAGIC MUSCLE came back with a new line-up which featured Steve Broughton (Edgar Broughton Band) on drums and guitarist Nick Saloman. This line-up recorded the top-notch space rock album 'Gulp!', which also conotes the band's final output By 1994 Rod Goodway returned to other pursuits while the rest of the outfit effectively became the new line-up for Bevis Frond.
