Canadian project MOEBIUS CAT is the creative vehicle of composer and multi-instrumentalist Roman Bershadsky, in which he seeks to combine his affections for musical styles such as world fusion, neo-classical music, gothic and dark folk as well as progressive rock. So far this has resulted in two full length albums: Arrivals<>Departures in 2003 and End of Time in 2010. The latter of which was reissued by Russian label MALS Records in 2012.

4 stars Moebius Cat is the project of composer and multi-instrumentalist Roman Bershadsky, and this is their second album. Originally released in 2010 it has now been made available through Mals. Roman provides a whole host of instruments himself, but also uses a lot of other personnel which really gives the album a lot of depth and class.

The female vocals are clear and delicate in a way not too dissimilar to Mermaid Kiss or Iona, and while the emotive atmosphere is probably what really makes this stand out in so many ways it is a very different form to the latter. The use of string instruments, wind and an accordion among others pushes this into a quite different area to what many people would think of as 'progressive', but to my mind this is Renaissance being stretched and moved into a new area. Progressive/classical/folk maybe? Roman himself says that it is a mix of dark wave, progressive rock, experimental, world fusion, gothic ethereal, electronic and neoclassical styles. I may not be sure what to call it but I know that I like it, and given that you can download it for free why not give it a try? Roman only asks that if you like it and decide to keep it then pay what you feel it is worth. It is also possible to obtain their debut 2003 album 'Arrivals <> Departures' in the same way.

4 stars MOEBIUS CAT is the creative vehicle of Canadian composer and instrumentalist Roman Bershadsky. The first album to be released under this moniker was "Arrivals Departures" in 2003. "End of Time" is the project's sophomore production, initially digitally released in 2010, and reissued by Russia MALS Records on CD in 2012.

While one might conclude that Moebius Cat's second album is one that can be sorted under progressive folk rock, it would appear that it is the mystical atmospheres that are the key features rather than the stylistic expression as such. The songs are mostly straightforward and easygoing in nature, and I suspect that those with a taste for rock music of a gently sophisticated nature, who also have a passion for the realms of the fantastic, should be something of a key audience for this disc.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
