I used to think that Ange were the uncontestable leader of french prog. I still believe so, but I've found out how to state it more clearly as an opinion. I did get a lot of feedback, though , that led me to some interesting french bands.
The other newbie nostalgia is coming on like a storm of seeming logic, only to find out that you're thought of as a tempest in the tea pot. That & the fact that sarcasm doesn't translate well in written communication. Ouch

I used to think that only Rush was progressive rock. Embarrassed

(Well you try to not get that idea after only listening to one progressive rock band for more than a year and not hearing mention of any other band)

Oh and I also used to think I would never touch anything with Phil Collins in it. Until I heard Gabriel-era Genesis.

When I discovered PA and Prog with it  I thought that music made in the early 70's and late 60's would sound like crap. 1. I was much more easily-amused musically.  Pretty much every prog discovery at the time absolutely amazed me and I always though "Wow, this is so awesome and different!" for bands even now I don't think much of (Rush, ELP, Kansas).

2. I thought most prog bands were incredibly obscure.  Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator were considered two VERY obscure bands by myself when I was new.  Now they might be obscure for high school students, but not at all for most serious fans of music.

3. I used to be able to listen to the same albums more at a time.  I would never get sick of them.  Now, while I don't get sick of albums I really like, most 3 star or under albums don't get too many plays in my rotation.  I buy a lot more (and download rare stuff), so I have more selection to listen to.

That's pretty much it.  I miss being new on my prog journey in some respects, since thinking about it is pretty nostalgic, but I do like being knowledgeable and having a more diverse taste (prog and non-prog).

When I discovered this site a year ago I was surprised to see that Led Zeppelin wasn't included in Prog Related (yet).

I was also surprised to discover that Van der Graaf Generator was a Prog band. At the time, I had never heard them, but I recognized the name. I had read it a couple of times in the Jimi Hendrix biography by John McDermott and Eddie Kramer, and I assumed they were just another late 60's Psychedelic Rock band.

I thought it was stupid to have Deep Purple in Proto-Prog (I still do).

I thought I already knew most prog.

I didn't think any relevant prog had been made in the last 20-30 years.

I used to just not care about prog-metal (DT - style). Now I hate it.

Before I had heard any of it, I was certain all other Zeuhl would be uninteresting Magmacopies. 

The only bands I really associated with RIO, was Henry Cow and Univers Zero.

I'll talk about one of my first contacts with Krautrock, back in 1992. I had seen Werner Herzog's "Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes" and got impressed by Popol Vuh's mellotron/moog driven soundtrack, so I rushed to buy what, on specialised press, was mentioned as their most successful album, i.e. "Seligpreisung". I put my CD in the player, ready to set on a vintage electronic trip, and at first I was quite disappointed with what I heard instead... As a teenager living in the town of Genk (Belgium), I initially thought Jimi Hendrix was a Dutch (or Flemish) singer of cheap sentimental ballads (called "smartlappen" in Dutch). I guess I must have got confused because there are thousands of people called Hendrix in the Low Countries! We even had a teacher whose name was Hendricks. Moreover, there was at least one singer of torch songs whose first name actually was Jimmy.

This post is directed to PA members who have been here for a long, like a year, or people who have just becaame interested in progressisve music.  I'm just crurious about some of the thoughts proggers had about certain genres and bands that turned out to be completely wrong. 
 
For example,
1.  I thought Van Der Graaf Generator  was a krautrock band
2. I thought Starless and Bible Black was the last Wetton-era album
