It gets mentioned by a number of "Collaborators" quite a bit, but notthat much by others, and non-"Prog Reviewer" collaborators are oftenbusier with other site things than reviews.

It's my most played album of 2007, but I wouldn't recommend it to mostProggers. It's subtle, tasteful, and mature with an intimate sound. When one is tired of the excess of so much Prog this is a refreshingalbum to visit that is categorised under the "prog umbrella". I don't think it that "Prog", actually, but nicelyprogressive. It's rather poppy and light jazzy, but lovely, and with awonderful sense of wit and sincerity. Some won't like some of themessages in the music as Wyatt has a leftist ideology.

Anyway, if one is not that familiar with Wyatt, this wouldn't be the first I'd recommend. Rock Bottom is his one to start with and his work with Soft Machine and Matching Mole.

If I were to review it (reviewing not being my thing), I don't knowthat I'd have much to say of interest. It's more smoky pub, or smoky lounge music thanbig arena music. Maybe because it has an intimate feel to it, anddoesn't try to hit you over the head with wow moments (is subtle), onemay not feel compelled to review it so much even if one loves themusic. Better to experience it intimately, for me, than to read about itand share one's personal relationship with the music and the artist. It helps greatly to be an admirer of Wyatt already -- it's a verypersonable album from a personable artist. And while it is not themost obviously Prog of albums, it's something that many fans of theCanterbury Scene will find much to love.

It has made various professional magazine lists as one of the best of the year.

It wasn't my number one choice in the end, but it's the one I reallyenjoy and continually revisit -- I gave Rational Diet's as my topchoice (it only has three written reviews too).

JohnObvious, looking at your reviews, I see you haven't reviewed any Canterbury Scene albums. I don't know how much you know from the category, or how much you like Canterbury Scene music already, nor do I know how much you like jazzy music, but based on your reviews, it is not something that I would recommend to you. I'd go to other Canterbury and Wyatt albums beforehand (though this is a very accessible album, I would say, generally-speaking).

If this album is so good, why aren't there many more reviews for it? I haven't heard it but was considering buying it last night with an itunes credit I have. Only 3 written reviews for the number 2 album of the year seems a little odd. I went with The Dear Hunter instead.

I don't think it measures up with Kid A either, or OK Computer for that matter, but it still towers over the majority of 2007's offerings IMO.

I actually do prefer it to OK Computer by a bit but yeah pales in comparison to Kid A and Amnesiac. Still, as you said, towers over the 2007 offerings, and it's been a damn good year for music.

I was ecstatic to see that Neal Morse's Sola Scriptura was 5th place. Actually, I was more suprised than anything, although I absolutely believe it deserves that position. I just thought it would be hard for it to get in the top ten, since some people refuse to listen to Neal Morse's music period, for obvious reasons. Also, even if they do listen to it, a ceratin 'preachyness' sometimes sways their rating... though I think it's completely irrelevant to the quality of the music whether it is wanted or not.

I fall into the category of enthusiasts who knows only a small percentage of the albums on the list so, for me, it represents a useful guide.

I am familiar with FOABP though and, for what it is worth, I think it's good but not that great. It seems that it was most popular by a long margin. Let's hope we are not getting too tunnel-visioned here with all things Wilson and PT [ having said that, the 'Arriving Somewhere ....' DVD is excellent imo].

Like 'Inverted', I would also like to put in a word for 'The Hemulic Voluntary Band' by RITUAL. The album has rated well here but may not be that widely known. Making the list may have given it some more exposure, as it is excellent . Again, for what it is worth, it's one of the few albums in some years about which, at the prospect of listening, I become quite excited ! !

Besides that jazz, I enjoyed the list, I think Do Make Say Think's latest was a tad underrated, same for John Zorn's Six Litanies for Heliogabalus.

Glad to see Sleepytime Gorilla Museum getting recognition, that was a brilliant album.

I was surprised when found out that FOABP is the best album of 2007 in most people's opinions. I don't want to say that the album is bad, but it's definitely a step back for Porcupines.
To be honest, 2007 was full of great prog albums, just to mention Oceansize, Pelican, Satellite or The Gourishankar.

I agree with most of what made it in to the top 20. Don't know why FOABP gets such a bad rap - It was definitely one of my favorites of the year.

PS; If galahad last album is a big step foward from their previousoutput....DAMN...I don't to listen to the rest of what they did!

PPS: I agree, Pain's last album is not as good as the previousone...but is still a better output then a couple of name that I saw onthat list

It's suprising to see the list get full of new band like SGM, The Dear Hunter or with Avant-garde like Zorn but still saying that Galahad is good enough to be in the top 100 of 2007 with their regressive boring rock.

Count me as one of the members that dislike Scarsick, I think Galahad's Empires Never Last is way better than PoS's (i do like a lot PoS, but not the last one). Talking about Galahad, i believe this album was a big step forward in their career and i don't think it sounds 80's like some of their previous releases. WE ARE in 2008 and i still think Galahad's album should've been higher (maybe not top 20 but at least top 50) in the 2007 list.

As far as I know, Isis didnt release an album last year. As for the others, well I only know the Pelican and PoS ones and they were nothing special (clearly havnt been here long or you'd know that Scarsick gets some real hate on here from a number of people, and most others just find it OK).

I'll have to second that, and I for one enjoyed them both. Fans of Fear really should check out Tony's album, I think you'll like it, too (the opening track is a little difficult listening, but the rest is most excellent). (Don't know nothin' about Oceansize, so no comment there.)

You need to be a prog reviewer, collaborater or special colaborater (4 or 5 stars under your name basically) to get into the collabs zone were the voting is done.

Although I voted myself in the non colabs top albums I tend to wait until around March to work out my own personal top ten albums of the year; let the dust settle a bit and a few 2007 albums bought near the end of the year or early 2008 need time to be digested.

Interesting to see Porcupine Tree toping both lists and a deserved placing I think even though it wont be my album of the year, although somewhere near the top. Nice to see them getting some credit for a strong album and also by Prog standards a bit of commercial success.

Nice list, love to see Comicopera and A Time of Day in the Top 5, sadly my number 1 which was Outer Limits - Stromatolite didn`t receive other votes, neither did Phlox`s album, and Mar de Robles was so low after all, i was one of the people who gave an honourable mention to Gazpacho`s album, it is really a pity to see it did not receive a single vote!!

FOABP is a very good album, but i would have liked to see another one as the winner.
