As far as I'm concerned, ELP was tremendously inconsistent and pretentious in a bad way (their pretension often didn't yield anything spectacular or memorable long-term). The Flower Kings albums are often hit and miss too, but I can count on at least 2/3 of the record to be worth listening to or better, and I can't say that about ELP. "Karn Evil 9" is the only ELP song I still listen to. But hey it seems I'm in the minority. Well, it does seem decided, and I'd like to close it down... but it has only been two days since I posted the initial post, so I think I should wait at least another 24 hours probably. I'm not sure. I didn't expect results to flow in this quickly for these polls.

TFK samples going...

Big Puzzle - remember liking it much more than I'd expected to. Guitars quite good, all round decent. One instrumental section felt a tad pointless. All-round quite nice.

You really ask me to compare the Flower Kings to ELP?  Hmm, let me think about it.. to me:
-ELP are masters of their instruments, can rock without a guitar-player, have great suites, long instrumental parts which sometimes end up in insane key solos. And they have three of my favourite albums.
-the Flower Kings are.. well.. average to me.. I do not like anything about them, sure they are capable players and Roine Stolt is a good song writer, but it is nothing special to my ears. Also, they sound to much 70's (yes, I draw the comparison I hate). Originality is certainly not their strong point. The instrumental parts seem to much "uncontrolled"..
 
So, ELP, without a doubt. Yet if I was to vote who has the more consistent discography, it would be the Flower Kings. ELP have many great albums and songs. And they have.. well, the others..

and PA celebrated album of the week LOVE BEACH is the perfect exemple....
.Imagine the 2 Roxy babes from your avatar or the cover from SIREN for LOVE BEACH .......would have been by now the ELP best selling.albumWink......and of course would be featured in the top 10 PA all time-best prog albums LOL list!

one side of it is garbage... one side is not.... if you listen to people...  and is ALL garbage.  Sure it not on par with earlier albums.. but again.. not an album devoid of any redeeming musical quality at all.


I'll maybe take the trek to listen to that one side one of these days. Not sure. It's just like choosing between Gabriel-era Genesis and Collins-era Genesis. Collins-era I'd hardly ever pull out, if at all anymore, but it's still better than most crap out there.

I really can't vote. I've only heard ELP, Tarkus and BSS, so I can't really pass judgment on ELP, and for TFK I've only heard the new album and Unfold The Future, only the latter of which I really like.

I was sad to see Area go up against Gong -- both favourite bands of mine, and neither would I want eliminated.  As For MO, voting for it was much easier for me (a no-brainer) and sorry that it lost.

I'm not the biggest ELP fan these days, but I still greatly prefer it to The Flower Kings.

Will take a listen to TFK's samples with an open mind, at least, but I will be very, very, very surprised if they somehow edge it over Emerson's sublime piano and the general force of ELP. Think I've wandered their way before, probably, but don't remember them that well.

It was a hard decision for me, but I went with TFK in the end. I love them both.
