No mention of the Rainbow gigs @ January 1977, Wind and Wuthering tour.

Perhaps it was because the Mellotron was 'playing-up' because of the cold weather...I should know,I was there every night and if I remember correctly,only on one night did the Mellotron not 'play-up'.

It (the Mellotron) sounded like a drunkard 'singing' underwater.

I would also like to hear the complete 1976 Hammersmith Odeon 'AToTT' material. Bruford was sensational on that tour.

It is true that their live albums add little to the studio material in terms of improvisation. Still, a lot of the material becomes more powerful in the live versions. If I compare, for instance, Watcher Of The Skies on Genesis Live with the studio version on Foxtrot, then in my ears the song is more organic sounding in the live version.
 
The same goes for instance for Dance On A Volcano and Los Endos from A Trick Of The Tail, if you compare them with the live versions on Seconds Out. In the live versions they are much more powerful.
 
Also a song like In The Cage has grown enormously in power, if you hear it back on Three Sides Live.
 
Granted, all of the live albums of Genesis don't satisfy on every level, but I can see a good reason for releasing them nevertheless.
 
But I do agree that it is a pity that there is not much room for improvisation. It's a bit like cooking (I shouldn't use this example for someone who owns a restaurant, very tricky LOL): there are the people who like to stick to a receipe and consider changing the ingredients as a sacrilege, or just don't dare to step away from what is prescribed. There are also the experimental cooks.
 
I think the best example in prog where the two approaches were clashing was within the band UK, where you saw the composers (Wetton, Jobson) versus the improvisators (Bruford, Holdsworth). If I recall well, John Wetton or Eddie Jobson (or both) wanted Allan Holdsworth to repeat the same solo over and over, every night. Holdsworth couldn't do that, and the difference in approaches led to a split of the band.
 
It's obvious that without improvising, or other changes, you see no good reason for a live album. I agree with you that I miss in Genesis the improvisation or changes as well, but I do think that quite some of their music sound better in a live version, nevertheless.

Not all the material desired (5 tracks from LLDOB  is definitly not something I wished for Live...)

When Genesis released "Genesis: 1970-1975," its third boxed set ofstudio albums, last fall, keyboardist Tony Banks told Billboard.comthat "the next logical thing to do would be something with the livealbums. We have a few of those, and we have quite a bit of stuff inthe vaults that could be added to flesh things out a bit."

That will happen on Sept. 29, when Rhino releases "Genesis Live1973-2007," a 10-disc set featuring five of the group's sixofficial live albums -- it will include a spot for last year's"Live Over Europe" album from the 2007 reunion tour -- along with awealth of unreleased material. Included in the latter will be "Liveat the Rainbow 1973," an oft-bootlegged nine-song collection(portions of which have been previously released) recorded duringOctober of that year in London after the release of "SellingEngland By the Pound."

The 1973 release "Genesis Live" will be bolstered by five tracksfrom "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" tour recorded in January of1975 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. "Seconds Out" from1977 will remain intact, while the version of 1982's "Three SidesLive" in the box will feature the live tracks from the U.K. editionof the album -- "One For the Vine," "Fountain of Salmacis" and amedley of "It" and "Watcher of the Skies" -- rather than the studiosongs that were part of the U.S. package. The box also reconcilesthe two versions of "The Way We Walk," which had beensub-titled  "The Shorts" (1992) and "The Long" (1993), andcombines them in the original concert sequence.

Genesis members Banks and Rutherford rode herd on the remixing ofthe albums with Nick Davis. "Genesis Live," "Seconds Out" and "LiveAt The Rainbow 1973" all feature 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Soundversions.
 
Delving into the backlog of live recordings may also hasten therelease of individual shows via Genesis' web site, something thegroup promised when it launched the portal several years ago. "Westill talk about that," Banks acknowledged. "We will get to it. Idon't know when, but I promise you we'll do it. We've pulled tapesfrom all sorts of areas, and we've got board mixes from quite anearly era, so that will be quite fun for some people." Rutherfordadded that, "There's some quite nice things there, I think. It justrequires energies from someone to pull it all together and put itall out in a way that makes some sort of sense."

They should split the thing into Gabriel & Collins eras. I won't be buying it in its suggested format, as I have no desire to listen to hours worth of the 80s pop band "Genesis", plus one has to remeber in these hard times that it will probably cost far too much. Cry
 
On the other hand I WOULD buy a Gabriel era live box set, and scrape the cash together however i could! Smile

i.e. that material already released on the first 'Archives' set.

I'm now unsure about this set as I was hoping maybe the later shows would be on a seperate set to the earlier ones... I'm unashamedly unimpressed with the Live Over Europe set, as I see it as a recording of a bored band going through the motions on their way out.

No SACD's ? So who not make this cd's hybrid ? Are you sure this is not only for the US where they also do not contain the SACD's ?
 
I really hope that indeed all omitted songs are going to be added back in, especially in the Seconds Out tour, but also the We Can't Dance and Invisible Tour tour.....not to mention the strange collection of songs on Three Sides Live, so whole concerts indeed should be a nice starter..............and then also in the nice order....sweet !!!
 
I think the 10th cd will contain Genesis Live in the original press release (which in including Supper's Ready and spoken intro's......for the rest I just let it come......but to hear it on SACD was a really big dream of me.........however DVD Audio should do fine too..............But atleast I hope they will add a surround mix......
 
The only thing I don't understand is why Live Over Europe will also be added...............The quality is phenomenal......and there is a DVD available in the Rome concert......so I don't really think that was needed....Anyway.......let's see it will be the crown on my Genesis collection (or is that my first LP pressing of the Lamb that is signed by Mike ?)..........................

GENESIS: The upcoming Live box set, entitled Live 1972-2007, has a release date: EMI Netherlandshas confirmed a September 14 release. The box will contain 10 CDs and 3DVDs, and at this moment it is still uncertain what the exact contentswill be. The Genesis fansites are rife with speculation though and itis generally accepted that the box will contain at least all officiallive albums: Live, Seconds Out, Three Sides Live, The Way We Walk and Live Over Europe.Any recordings which were omitted from the original album release willbe re-instated. Furthermore The Way We Walk will run in the setlistorder, rather than the "shorts" and "longs" division of the originalalbums. These 5 live albums will take up 9 of the 10 CDs and it iswidely speculated that the 10th CD will contain bonus material from theshows at Rainbow Theatre, London, 1973 and the Shrine Auditorium ShowLos Angeles, 1975.

No - there are only some God awful bootlegs, which should be avoided at all costs. But I do understand that the original mix is still in the hands of the band. Gabriel simply did not want it released because of its musical inferiority, in his eyes.

If this is the case, and I've only heard it on the grapevine, I would love to see it released. I can't see the point of simply remastering stuff we've already got - let's have something brand new, and, in the context of the band, massively important. After all, they did it with the recording of The Lamb live on the first box set.

After standing in the pouring rain and mud at Milton Keynes in October 1982 to see the reunion gig in support of WOMAD, I for one would love to have an official release of this. Musically it wasn't brilliant, but as a piece of musical history and sheer nostalgia it was magic.

We'll it means that the previous 3 boxes sold we'll enough to proceed the remastering of the rest. Read..the live albums...and that is indeed good news. Up to the quality of the new remasters, the live stuff indeed sounds pale and terrible.....so some urgent update on that is needed.
 
Its good news they intend to include the scrapped songs from Genesis Live. As far as I know there is nothing bootleggish about this, as it was originally a Belgium press release that did contain more songs than the eventual release....Indeed I'm looking forward to hear this....if it sounds as fantastic as the rest...count me in.
 
But also, I'd be delighted to hear the other songs...in that I mean the complete set of the Seconds Out show....The other tracks on of the Three Sides Out...not to mention the songs of the We Can't Dance Tour in chronological order....and not as The Long and shorts.
 
As for the Mama tour video, please the complete set, and same would go for the Live At Wembley show....Now all this would be a great start....more unreleased stuff is welcome ofcourse.......Perhaps they can also remaster the music (although it's already very good) of the Archives 1 box.........
 
I like the idea to release it in 2 boxes...as long as the content is good enough........and ofcourse the quality.....If it's really true what Banks said in the interview to announce the new World Tour : 'We got stacks of them.' then....Im sure that sooner or later some real goody stuff will come to us...
 
However, anticipated fans already own most of this stuff through lesser legal channels so unless the quality is extremely good....it also can turn out to be nothing more than water after the wine.

One can only hope it comes in two volumes, say 1970 - 1980 and 1980 onwards, as most of their post 1980 output would struggle to be termed prog if by a new or different band, which let's face it, is what Genesis became once Mr Collins decided to make some nice pop tunes (and loadsa money)!!
 
Would deffo buy the first volume though - bring it on!!

I hope and pray that their half-official bootleg from the Gabriel era (I am not sure if I am allowed to name bootlegs here so I have omitted the title while awaiting a ruling from the admin) finally will be made into an official live album by Genesis and included in the box. It is a superb album and very much loved in my home. I know the band themselves rates this album very highly.

After the three box sets of studio stuff it now looks like Genesis are compiling a further box set of all the live albums.

On the Genesis website, the band posted a request to locate the original master tapes of the first Genesis Live album:

"Those of you who are eagle-eyed readers of our news page here onGenesis-Music.com may remember a few weeks ago that I posted a call foranyone with any knowledge of the location of the Genesis "Live"multitracks to please come forward.  This album, the first live one inthe Genesis canon, had missing multitracks, and was in danger of notbeing formally remixed for the upcoming Live 5.1 box set, for releasein the future.

We are happy to announce that according to Nick Davis, Genesisproducer extraordinaire, the "Live" multitracks have been found!  As weget more details on the exact story behind the location of the tapes,we will share whatever information we can here."

Now, does this mean that those masters will feature the 'lost' live version of Supper's Ready that was pressed on a few few promo double lp versions? http://www.genesismuseum.com/vinyl/live.htm

Anyway, the box set should be interesting. Wonder how much other unreleased classic period 'desk' tapes are out there?
