when a friend told me this at work that waters was going to play with the whole band i thought he was joking and i did not believe it and i did not bother to really find out that if that was true and it was true whao !!!!. i do not much about it

One day I went to a music instruments store, and they also had books with musical scores. I saw one book of scores of Pink Floyd`s "Wish You Were Here" album. This book also included photos and interviews with the band. In one of these interviews, Roger Waters says (more or less as I remember): "I really think that I can`t sing very well, so I suggested to the band to invite Roy Harper to sing "Have a Cigar",and the band answered  "Yes" very  quickly, maybe also thinking that I can`t sing. So we invited Roy Harper. I liked his voice, but in the end I also thought that I could sing that song well doing a bit differently than Roy. I think that the composer sometimes is the best singer of his songs". So, Waters, by 1975, also was thinking that he wasn`t a good lead singer, anyway. He also said in that interview that he thought that Gilmour was the best singer in the band.

Edit: I remembered that I have a book called "Pink Floyd" written by Miles. In this book, talking about the "Wish..." album, Roger said: ""Shine on You Crazy Diamond" was right on the edge of my range. I was feeling very insecure about singing". Roger suggested Roy Harper to sing the vocal (on "Have a cigar"). "I sort of expected them to say, "No, you do Roger", but they didn`t, they said "Great Idea". I now wish that I had done it. Though Harper did a fine job of singing it, a song can never sound quite right to the person who actually wrote it and that`s how Roger sees it , "Just one or two little things that I`d have done a bit differently...".

Saw the Animals tour (Gilmour pretty much ignored Waters back then as well BTW) where they played both WYWH and Money. The Live 8 performances of those 2 songs was definitely better, but seeing the Animal album performed live was unforgettable, especially as it was one the first five or so prog gigs I ever saw.

Reacting rather late here, but I can only echo 3Fates and say that the performance really did bring goosebumps, especially when Gilmour and Waters actually sang together on WYWH and Comfortably Numb. Here in the UK we did get a couple of brief glimpses of Rick. Magical stuff, the only stranger event would have been Syd joining them for Astronomy Domine.

Put it down to a bit of nerves Nacho and the fact the guy is pushing 60.... 3 billion viewers can wrangle the nerves. Roger W has never been a great vocalist but it has always been his cutting edge steel like voice which has provided angst in his voice. Don't let the small sh!t bother you, enjoy the bigger picture

I agree it was a pretty good show, but are Certif1ed and I the only ones who think that Roger can't sing?

This was a truly momentous occassion. Yams, you have said it all.......Floyd are back together again ( This is not a naive nostalgic blip either)

Gilmour has near completed a solo album

Waters has his next solo album in the bag but is holding off until Ca Ira is released by Sony in September. Trust me, both solo's will be redesigned and rechannelled into a Floyd studio album for release late 2006.

I have to wait to next Sunday to see this "Live 8" Show. It wasn`t broadcasted on TV in my city, and I couldn`t watch it in AOL Music (my PC is really  "old" now!). One TV channel here announced yesterday that they are going to broadcast the show next Sunday, and after I read to all the commentaries in this thread, I hope to see the BBC version being broadcasted here. But also knowing how this TV channel works (it is part of a two channel company, called TVAzteca, and it likes to broadcast adds more than other TV companies, they are like "We are only  here only for the money") maybe they are going to put ads in the middle of the songs!

This Pink Floyd Reunion wasn`t so "quickly" after all. It really took some years. I read some interviews in the Internet, and during the last 6 years there were indications that this Reunion could happen:

-One interview with Wright in which he said that he went to see Waters in concert in the late 90s, and later he went backstage to say "Hello" to Waters.Wright also said that he wasn`t in a good shape when he left PF, and that Waters was more or less right about saying that Wright wasn`t contributing very much to "The Wall". Wright said that he had at the time some personal problems and some problems with the use of substances, and that he wasn`t very happy with  "The Wall" album project.

-One interview with Waters in which he said that he saw Mason on a beach during holidays, and that he thought that there wasn`t a good reason to be in an "eternal fight" with his old friend Mason, so he went to say "Hello" and to chat with Mason. Mason appeared sometime  later in one of Waters`shows playing drums in "Set the controls to the heart  of the Sun".

-During the making of the "Echoes" compilation, the 4 members had to agree in the selection of the songs, so producer James Guthrie had to act as a "messenger" between Pink Floyd and Waters.Finally, they agreed in the selection of the songs for the album. They didn`t start a "battle". There were indications of them  being in good terms.

Absolutely phenominal!!!  My god....I was seriously choked up.  It was amazing how they looked like they hadn't ever missed a beat in the last 23 years.

Gilmour looked to me like he was ignoring Waters, maybe thats just Gilmours demeanor? I had the MTV and VH1 recordings...so the end was cut out.  But during the numbers I don't think I saw DG look at RW one time.

Waters was thouroughly enjoying himself, smiling..looking at his bandmates, looked like he was really digging it.

Mason was so into comfortably numb, halfway through the song he throws his headphones off, couple secs later they pan back to him and he has his eyes shut.....the Dude was seriously into the groove and was feelin it.

For those guys who love Floyd and missed it......find a way to see it!!!!

Yes, its an actual photo from Getty Images taken from an annual well to do garden party held in London.  Dave and his wife, Polly, above attend this every year... seems this year was Roger's first.  Looks like it went really well........

I have been following Pink Floyd for the past 30 years, since I first heard DSOTM. Yesterday's event was truly fantastic - I guess it is the nostalgia and the expectations for the re-union that made it such a big event. Just fyi - At that same site, 35 years earlier, they did the Atom Heart Mother Hyde Park free concert (I Wish I Was There !!)

Got to be the highlight of the year. Waters seemed genuinely happy to be playing with his old band mates again.

They're all a bit older and  bit wiser now, so who knows, a tour perhaps?

Did anyone else notice the banner in the crowd which read somehting like "Pink Floyd back together, look there's a flying pig!".

To me it is clear this was a one off momentum. They will never perform again in this line-up, I think. Waters tried to be friendly towards the others but Gilmour didn't even look at him. You could feel this wasn't a band anymore but three ex members and a stranger. But I hope I'm wrong off course...

I think Gilmour was just concentrating - the man has to play lead guitar and sing most of the time, plus playing again with Waters - I'm sure they didn't have much rehearsal time (not that they need it!).  If you ever see Gilmour perform, he rarely smiles.  He's just a different type of performer than Waters.

Sadly to say, I'll have to agree with you about them not performing together again.  I'm not getting my hopes up for a reunion tour but if there was one, I'll be first in line to get tickets!

I think you're wrong.. Roger looked happy as a clam... and Dave looks just like he always did.  In every live PF show I've ever seen, Dave barely moves, hardly ever smiles.. because what he plays is so intense, his concentration is on the music.. not on whats happening around him.  This was the most I've seen him smile and move during a show in the last 20 years...  and he and Roger have been conversing for a couple of weeks now... seems to be going well..

I agree with most of you. I didn't expect them to be great but they were. It was moving to see they still could manage after all those years. The guitarlicks of Gilmour were sounding astonishing and Mason wasn't bad at all. Waters was enthousiastic but suffered from a bad voice, he usually sounds better (just listen to the "In the flesh" dvd), a pitty the people of the bbc didn't knew Wright was also a member of the band. I waited 20 years for this reunion but I never believed it actually would ever happen. But it did and it was brilliant which was quite unbelieveable knowing they only had a couple of weeks for rehearsals. I had a lump in my troat during "Wish you were here".
