Well, Waters did a similar arrangement for Welcome to the Machine too (though I think the last one doesn't have sax... but it's got female vocals). On both songs I really didn't like them at first very much... but then I got used to them and now I find them really enjoyable, almost as much as the Floyd versions. But still, the minimalism of the Floyd versions wins for me, I feel it fits this songs better. Have you heard the live version of Set the Controls from Ummagumma and Live at Pompeii? Those ones are kind of stronger, and you may just as well like them better. There's also the live version from Roger's In the Flesh album, which has quiet a different arrangement, even with sax and female backing vocals. As a matter of fact I also liked See Saw quiet a bit, though not as much as the others. Still, I'm a bit surprised it's got absolutley no vote. Now, Jugband Blues is song I find very interesting because of it's lyrics and it's meaning... but the performance is not my favourite on the album. It's a very difficult choice between the first 3 songs... love 'em all. I also love the title track, but only the live versions, specially the one on Ummagumma. As a matter of fact, I also like "Set the Controls" much better on the Live at Pompeii version, and after that, listening the the studio version leaves me rather underwhelmed. Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and, to a lesser extent, A Saucerful of Secrets are just draft versions compared to the magnificent live versions (of which the version of Set the Controls from Live at Pompeii stands out).

The title track, Careful With That Axe Eugene and Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun, for me, are a little boring when compared to most live versions I've heard.

Jugband Blues is definitely my favorite track. I do like the whole album though.

And to reply to Hercules, I absolutely love trippy music even if I have never got an acid in my life. LSD was supposed to be a mind opener by Timothy Leary. I like to open my mind and travel in deep space on a starship made of sounds.

I'm sorry for you if you are unable of doing it, but try flying to Alpha Centauri with Tangerine Dream and let us know...

Ditto here as well (good comments). Incidentally, when I first listened to Saucerful of Secrets I thought it was a hugh letdown after Piper at the Gates of Dawn. I've since revised (upwards) my opinion of Saucerful of Secrets but still regard their debut as a much better album. Hercules should at least listen to a few more Pink Floyd albums before he makes blanket statements (ie. this is crap) about early Pink Floyd music.

I bought this album in 1970; I've listened to it about four or five times and I really can't remember enjoying any of it. Intelligence has nothing to do with it; it's about taste.

Yeah, Saucerful is way better live. Just listen to the Live At Pompeii version; beautiful. In my top 5 for Floyd tunes.

Anyway I think the title track is amazing and it takes it's true form when they perfomed it live. The opener is a strong one too. 4 stars album
