Flash frontman Colin Carter says that when the band was looking for a song to cover, “Hurt” found new life in Flash’s nine-and-a-half-minute prog arrangement without any difficulty.

“I knew when I first heard the Johnny Cash version of ‘Hurt’ that its mood and structure and lyric would work for me,” Carter says. “I began singing it in my own fashion even before hearing Mr. Reznor’s take on it, his starker delivery. I borrowed his structure and his lyrics, gave a nod to Mr. Cash’s formalization of the piece, then painted it with my own spray can.”

Reznor’s original lyric contains the line I wear this crown of sh*t/upon my liar’s chair, but Cash changed the line to crown of thorns, perhaps in an effort to both remove the profanity and reference his own life as a damaged, but devout, Christian. Lewis followed suit with her version, as does Flash. “I think ‘thorns’ produces a stronger mental image than Trent’s ‘sh*t,’” Carter says. “But Trent is the master of the work and his is the anchor point we all work from.”

Reznor may never have thought about anyone else covering this song, especially given the frame of mind he must have been in when he wrote it. But it is becoming a classic of sorts, and will probably be covered again, though maybe not by someone as unlikely as a country music icon or a legendary British prog-rock band.

If you should happen to go surfing for the lyrics yourself, be careful, as the Internet is sometimes not always the best source of information. For instance, the LyricsFreak website mistakenly credits Reznor’s lyrics to Linda Perry, Christina Aguilera and Mark Ronson, because Aguilera also cut a song called “Hurt.”

<strong style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; font-size: 14px; margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-weight: bold; ">“Hurt”

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that’s real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear my crown of thorns
On my liar’s chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Edited by sherrynoland - June 17 2013 at 16:37

Between the two genres there exists a continuum of sound – who can say where one ends and the other begins?

With this intention we have chosen some of the masterpieces of progressive rock music. Friends and family, Steve Hackett, Dave Jackson and Giorgio Gabriel, did us the honour of accepting our proposal to perform all the pieces in new, interesting ways. These are fresh interpretations, in a way close to the performance of classical music without drums and vocals.

The core of our idea is to give a place of honour to progressive rock music on the same level as the works of the great classical composers. Progressive rock lyrics have often drawn on elements of myth and fantasy, so we have also included some new pieces inspired by the literature of JRR Tolkien.
What more can we say? The heart of The Inner Road is Steve Gresswell and Jay Parmar.

Steve Gresswell is a highly respected and sought after keyboard player, songwriter and producer.

Steve Gresswell started writing music and playing keyboards professionally at the age of 15 and since then has been in a number of rock bands. Steve has recorded and produced many albums over the years, both his own work and other musicians.

Steve's work includes his highly acclaimed album 'Visions' which he released in October 2011 under the banner of The Inner Road (along with another renowned guitarist Phil Braithwaite). Steve also wrote and recorded an album by his band Coalition (released in March 2012), and was a guest on an album by well known French prog rock artist Bruno Pitch.

Jay Parmar is a renowned guitarist, songwriter and producer who currently has an album on release on Steve Vai's Digital Nations label.

Jay Parmar’s high octane guitar playing is infused with eastern influence and the sonic soundscapes that he creates are tangible and thought provoking.

Jay's work include his latest much revered album 'Circle of Fire' (2012), the acclaimed instrumental album 'Strange Day' (2005), the George Lynch Tribute album 'Will Play For Lynch' (2003) and appearance on 2 live tracks on the Eden's Curse album 'Condemned to Burn' (2009); and numerous guest appearances on other songs and albums.

The album was recorded, produced and mastered at Orbital Productions. Jay’s guitars (and sitar) recorded at Sacred Sound
Recording Studio. Steve and Chris Gresswell co-produced the album. The Executive Producer on the album is Chris Gresswell.

With many of their mission reports gone, the Loracle (their Zordon-esque lady-type computer... lady in a tube) is left with scattered memories that are now compensating for the freeing of space in her mainframe. All of these memories contained problematic specters with incomplete stories due to the Sentai's Hydra-like lack of focus. With time to fester and grow angry, the Ghosts are ready to end the Sentai's story altogether.

To keep the Loricle immortal, the memories of the spirits must be allowed to manifest into their original state, to recreate the memories that once trapped them in the Lorbryinth.

The first single (or rather, single and post single) off the album, House of Harbors, is available for download or streaming at bandcamp!
The EP serves as an introduction to a larger concept story being developed for their forthcoming 2nd album, tentatively titled Vespers For A Starless Night, due in late 2013 or early 2014. It will be the first new music from the band since 2009’s “A Time For Rust” and will feature new band members Shannon Kelly (ex-Avariel) on vocals and Rob Macleod (ex-A Dark In The Light) on bass.

The band is also using the EP’s release as a chance to start a charity campaign. From July 1- December 1, 2013, they will be donating $2 from each sale towards Manes and Motions, http://hfsc.org/manes-motions, a non-profit therapeutic riding organization started by Jerri Massi, mother of guitarist Greg Massi. Colour

The three songs show Baliset’s growth and development as songwriters over the last few years. Opening track “Moon And River” is a dense rock song with distinct movements. Countering the bombast of the opening track, “Ever A Relentless Tide” is a moody acoustic ballad which is built with subtle mellotron choirs, ambient drums, and Morricone-esque guitars. Rounding out the EP is “Colour” which is a folk-influenced Zeppelin-like rocker set to a stomping drum beat with grooving bass lines, soaring vocals, blistering guitar work, and culminating in a group vocal with lush vocals and harmonies submitted by fans and friends.

The EP was recorded concurrently with tracks for the upcoming album between May 2010-May 2013. It was primarily engineered and mixed by Eric Arena at Zing Recording Studios (Killswitch Engage, All That Remains) in Westfield, MA with additional tracking done by Glenn Smith at Amps Vs. Ohms in Cambridge, MA and the band’s home studio in Marlborough, MA. The EP was mastered by Maor Applebaum (Cynic, Halford, Yngwie Malmsteen) in Los Angeles, CA. The artwork and layout was designed by Eliran Kantor (Testament, Atheist) and band photography was done by Courtney Lucas.

Exordium will be released digitally via the band’s own Ret Con Recordings and distributed throughwww.retconrecordings.com.

Baliset is:

Shannon Kelly – vocals
Greg Massi – guitars, vocals, keyboards
Rob Macleod – bass
Adam Letourneau – drums, percussion, backing vocals

Contact:

baliset.mail@gmail.com

    Author: progbethyname
Subject: Dream Theater Enter Studio to Record 12th album
Posted: June 10 2013 at 10:56

I will say another thing.

I think we all should really examine the word 'different.' As we know, there are so many varying degrees of what can be classified as a difference or a degree of difference like temperate, moderate or even slightly you be a word used to be thrown in front of the word.....difference. Anyway, my point is that DT are using the word different very loosely in my opinion saying that their next album will be something different.
let's just ask a couple of questions to sort out what will Truely be different.

Will The new album be different sounding? Absolutely.

Will the album be a different style or even an incorporation of different styles?? My opinion. No.
And it's this question that get a lot of people confused when they hear DT say yeah are album will be completely different from our last. To be clear, in my opinion of course, the album will be different sounding but not a different style.

Dream Theater are a true Progressive Metal band and they established themselves as that. I think at this point their is no turning back. Dream Theater are loudly and proudly prog metal and sometimes a little symphonic at times.
I don't ever see them becoming something they are not like mixing or fusing other genres to their music like jazz, zeuhl, psyche Rock or even electronic to the point where any if those genres would be 'prominent' in their overall sound.

Dream Theater are an incredible band because they have explored a certain sub genre of music (prog metal) to its core and true depths. I respect that. I respect that so very much and I think at this point, for all they have done musically with in the genre, it would be extreamly difficult to find a way of creating a far different sound from what music they have been producing for the last 8 years. Can we say the water well is finally running dry? Maybe, but I sure love the brand of music they bring typical or not to my ears. I'm sure the next album will be quality with in the realm of what they Truely know how to do....that is....of course....produce thee most awesome prog metal that I've ever heard.

One last thing. I was stupid to say that i hope they incorporate some saxophone like they did in Another day. I'm a moron for saying that. I just have to 'get over' my deep affinity and love for the Images and Words album. I mean Christ, Another day is a song they did almost 25 years ago and have they brought back the saxophone in a song since? No. They have not and their is a reason for that. It was a one time thing for the sake and character of the album they were making with I&W's. I thought it was a huge success, Another Day....meh I just gotta get over my own sh*t. It's in the past.
