As a result, in the case of our site, it may happen that a band is included and after a couple of years the opinion is raised that it should be moved to another (sub)genre than where it was originally added. Causes could be simple mistakes at the time of additions, changes in definitions or unexpected events, e.g. the discovery of a whole new set of material (however unlikely that may seem).

The fact that bands are put in a certain (sub)genre with similar bands is only logical, and gives rise to one of the key strengths of ProgArchives: it enables people to easily discover bands that play a style of music similar to bands they already know and like. As such, there are two reasons to suggest and allow moving of bands to a different (sub)genre: integrity of the musical catalogue, and increasing a key strength of the site. However, in order to avoid 'band ping-pong' or moves based solely on individual opinions (which will result in simliar ping-pong as well as flame wars - neither of which benefits the site) with bands, the following policy for band moves is defined:

Moving an artist can only be proposed by a genre team, be it the team responsible for the (sub)genre in which the band is categorised, or the team that thinks the band fits better in their (sub)genre. Note that the former is likely more often the case.

A majority of the members of each of the two teams (that is a majority per team, not an overall majority!) proposing the move must vote in favour of the move, after a reasonable audit of the band. The results of the audit are made available and discussed in the two team threads or a dedicated thread in the (Special) Collaborator zone.

In case the two teams are unable to reach their respective majorities, or serious objections are raised by Special Collaborators outside the two teams, a final decision will be facilitated, or in the most extreme case made, by the admin team (to make this possible, they should be notified at the time the move is proposed).

Any move will require some scrutiny, since a band was not placed where it is without preparation. Therefore, the phrase 'reasonable audit' as mentioned in guideline number two requires some clarification. A reasonable audit is one that takes into account:

The band's opinion about themselves

Information about the band on other websites and magazines

Information available in other media

Reviews in ProgArchives and elsewhere

Data and opinion gathered from other Collabs

Edited by Dean - October 12 2011 at 19:04

Our objective is to build the definitive resource for all aspects of Prog, including band biographies, album reviews, and a detailed history of the genre. The site was founded in late 2003, and has grown rapidly since then.

We are already one of the most popular music websites in the world, and our database is the most extensive prog reference site available. BUT, we need YOUR help to make the site even better.

How YOU can help us to achieve our goal.

You can submit reviews of any albums listed on the site, as many as you wish, the more the better. Unlike other sites, we do not restrict the posting of reviews to a chosen few "expert" reviewers, we value your opinion. As soon as you submit your review, it will be added to the page for that album, and will appear on the home page of this site.

There are no complex formalities before you can submit a review; all we ask is that you register with the site via our forum. The registration process is simple, and will only take a few seconds. To submit a review, just go to the album of your choice, and click on the "Submit review" button, it really is that straightforward!

By registering with the site, you will be able to see a full list of all the reviews you have submitted by clicking on your name in any of your reviews. There are a few guidelines to help you on the review submission page, and further details are given in this thread in the forum: (post link)

The Forum

You can also participate in our very active forum, where you will receive a warm welcome. There is a section to introduce yourself (if you wish), and you can participate in any of the discussions which interest you. You can also suggest the addition of new bands to the site, and let us how you think we can improve the site. Once again, (as you would expect) there are a few simple rules about using the forum and these are detailed in this thread. (post link). You are welcome to create new topics, and there are guidelines on where to put the thread here: (post link).

We pride ourselves on having a friendly, moderated forum, where people can speak freely without fear of intimidation or antagonism.

Some other information you may find useful

The home page has a number of different sections to it:
<UL =DISC>
The latest reviews submitted to the site. The last 10 reviews are shown here. There is an option after the last review to see the latest 50 reviews instead.
A few adverts. By clicking on these, you help to drive revenue to keep the site going!
Links to various parts of the forum, via selected headlines.
RSS feeds, and details of how to use them
A list of our most prolific reviewers. Only reviews by what we call our "Collaborators" are counted here. See below for more information.
A stats section, including our top 100 albums. There are buttons at the foot of the chart to see the top 250 or top 500 albums. Our chart uses a complex algorithm to minimise the possibility of rigging. By clicking on the "TOP 100 button at the top of the chart, you can access a powerful tool which allows to filter specific by sub-genres, years and album types and see the top albums for your selection.

Across the top of each page, you will find links to other parts of the site.
These are: <UL =DISC>
Prog rock?: Want to know what Progressive rock is? Want to find out about the history of our music? All your questions will be answered here, plus many more you didn’t know to ask! Note that there are many links to further information within this page, look for the underlined text.
Collaborators: Our collaborators are the key members of our site.
There are four types of collaborators: <UL =DISC>
The founders and site owners, Rony ("Proglucky") and Maxime ("M@X").
The admin team. These are members of the site who have taken on administrative roles such as moderating the forum, monitoring reviews, and the general day to day management of the site. You can contact any member of the Admin team at any time if you have concerns about any aspect of the site.
Special collaborators. These are people who have taken on a specific task to help to run the site. They include our experts in the various sub-genres who will be happy to hear form you if you would like some advice or information from them.
Prog reviewers. These are people who have contributed many fine reviews of albums.

By clicking on any of the collaborators names on this page, you will see their biography (actually an auto-biography), and a list of the albums they have reviewed. If you would like to become a collaborator, please see the "Frequently asked questions" thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=13080

Forums: We have one of the most active music forums on the internet. You can browse the discussions without being a member, but why not sign up and participate? The forum is designed to be very user friendly, but there is a section called "How do I.." where you will find help with anything which is causing you difficulties. If your question has not already been answered, just start a new thread with your question, and you will get a quick response.
Prog radio: This section has links to some Progressive Rock radio stations which broadcast on the internet.
Prog Links: This section contains a list of websites dedicated to the vast WORLD of PROGRESSIVE ROCK, plus some other links we think you will find interesting. Progarchives does not consider other Prog websites to be competition. We share a love of Progressive rock music, and a desire to help people to discover it.
Prog archives: This section has a number of parts to it. The main body of the page gives a brief history of the site together with official contact details. There is a pro-forma you can complete if you wish to communicate with the site. Note however that it is often better to either post a message in the forum with corrections etc., or to send a "Private message" (PM) to a member of the admin team or a collaborator.
On the right hand side of the page there are three sections:
<UL =DISC>
New albums added - This is a list of albums which have recently been added to the site, regardless of when they were actually released.
New artists/bands - This is a list of individual artists and bands who have recently been added to the site.
Latest albums updates – This is a list of albums which already appear on the site, where the information has recently been updated.

Note that you can click on any album or artist to be taken to the page for that entry. There is a link at the bottom of each section, to allow you to expand the list.

Switch index
This appears just below the main options. There are 4 different indexes you can use, to find bands. When you view a list of bands or albums, you can click on any underlined item for a link to all bands in that category. For example, if you click on "Canada" in the country column, you will see a list of all the bands from that country.

<UL =DISC>
Genres. As you will discover when you read the "Prog rock" section, Progressive music comes in a many forms. To allow you to find bands who might appeal to you most, you can see a list of all the bands classified as being in a particular sub-genre, by clicking on the links in this index. Remember though that it can be difficult to pin many bands down to a specific sub-genre, especially those who have changed their style over the years.
TOP 100 Progressive Music Albums by Genre - This is another way of accessing the interrogation tool for the Top 100 albums mentioned above.
Bands - Here you can see an alphabetic list of all the bands on the site from A to Z. Individual artists are listed by surname, as are bands whose name starts with an individual’s surname. The word "The" at the start of any band name is ignored. Remember that some bands’ names (such as the ELP offshoot "3" and the German band "2Hot4U") are numbers, or start with numbers. These are listed under # . Compilations and other albums which are not by a specific artist are listed separately under "Various artists".
Albums - Here you can see an A to Z list of all albums on the site.

Band pages

Once you have found the page for a band you are interested in, you will find that the page has three sections. Firstly, you will see a biography of the band. The completion of these biographies is an on-going project. If the band you are viewing does not have a biography, you can help. Either through your knowledge of the band, or by undertaking some research, you can be credited as the author of the biography for that band.

Next you will find a section offering streaming of selected tracks or portions of tracks so that you can get a general impression of the music of the band.

Finally, you will see a full discography of the band. By clicking on any album, you will be taken to the specific page for that album (see below). There is an option to indicate whether you wish the page to show images of the album covers or not.

If you notice that an album is missing from the discography, you can add it to the database. Simply click on the "Add albums" link just above the discography and follow the instructions.

Album pages

Once you have clicked on a link to a specific album, you will be taken to a page giving full track and line up details of that album, together with all the reviews our members have submitted.

Once again, there is a section containing streaming of selected tracks or portions of tracks.

There is a link on each album page allowing you to submit your own review of the album. By clicking on this link, you will be taken to the submit review page, which contains guidelines on the content of reviews.

On the right hand side of each page, the full discography of the band is listed once again, allowing you to link quickly to another album by them. There is an option to indicate whether you wish the page to show images of the album covers or not.

    Author: Easy Livin
Subject: Site rules and guidelines
Posted: October 14 2005 at 14:29

Site Rules (Updated - October 2005)

Please read these rules carefully.

By participating in the forum, you are indicating your acceptance of them, and undertaking to abide by them.

The basics

1. No Vulgarity profanity, or bigotry

2. No Personal attacks (flaming or trolling)

3. No Pornography or offensive images

4. No Sniping

5. No Illegal activities

Those are the 5 simple rules we ask everyone to observe, in both the forum and the reviews section. Here are some more details of what each one means:

1. No Vulgarity, profanity or bigotry. We ask all members to refrain from using "foul language." Profanity - the deliberate denigration of another person's belief, will not be tolerated. Our membership is global, and thus represents a host of spiritual and religious beliefs. Given this, profanity is tantamount to personal attack (see next entry). Likewise, there is no place in this forum for bigotry (this includes religious bigotry, racism, and sexual discrimination) which are also considered to be personal attacks.
We are committed to not censoring messages or opinions, but this is a moderated forum. We simply want to maintain the spirit of an open, interactive discussion without offending any of the participants.
Any deliberate and conscious attempt to "circumvent" or ignore this guideline will be seen as grounds for a warning to be issued, and may result in ejection from the site.

Note that this rule extends to forum names too. You should ensure that your chosen forum name is not likely to cause offense to other members.

2. No Personal attacks (flaming or trolling). Keep it civil, show respect at all times for your fellow members. Disagreement, debate, even "heated" discussion is fine (though emoticons should be used to "soften" the effect of words). However, personally directed insults, denigration, etc. will not be tolerated, and will be grounds for warning and, if not stopped immediately, ejection. This applies equally to forum posts AND private messages. "Group-directed" insults and denigration (e.g., racism, sexism, ageism, etc.) also fall under this category, any such behavior will be taken on a case by case basis. Any member who engages in continuous baiting, borderline insults, or other continuously "aggressive" behaviour will be warned. Any member found to be using concurrent multiple personae (more than one profile at the same time) will be ejected from the site.

3. No Pornography or offensive images. The site is used by people of all ages. It is multi-cultural, with both male and female participants. Please keep in mind that pornography could get the site shut down. Any pornographic or offensive images (including photographs, cartoons etc.), posted on the site will be removed, and the member will be warned.

4. No Sniping. If you feel that someone has (i) baited or personally attacked you through the behaviours described in 1 or 2 above (whether in a thread or in a PM), do not engage that member in that thread, or reply to the PM. Instead, immediately send a PM to a forum moderator with details of (i) which member and (ii) which thread (please give the name of the thread, not the link) - or, if a PM, copy and paste in the text of the offending PM. The moderator will then determine what action needs to be taken (if any) and will reply to you. The moderators will try to reply to such incidents within 24 hours. In the meantime, please ignore that member and do not engage them in any way.

5. No Illegal activities. Posts and threads promoting or facilitating file swapping, drug abuse, or any other forum of illegal activity are not permitted. Any such posts will be deleted, and the member warned.

Other hints for making your time on the forum rewarding
(These do not form part of the rules, they are simply here to help you):

Be polite to everyone, respect their right to their opinions, even if you disagree with what they say. Bear in mind that anything you post can be read not just by the person you are addressing it to, but by everyone visiting the site, including non-members.

Be constructive, and stay "on topic". Do not make your posts deliberately inflammatory. You are far more likely to encourage a thoughtful discussion if the wording of your post is constructive.

Humour in the site is fine, we WANT people to enjoy themselves here. However, like everything else, when over used to the detriment of the thread, humour, can become counter-productive and frustrating to those who wish to talk seriously about the topic. Bear in mind also that what you consider to be funny may be offensive to someone else.

Use emoticons to convey your mood. Sometimes what you say may be open to misinterpretation. A simple smile, wink, laugh, etc. emoticon can make all the difference.

Use the report button which appears in every post to notify the admin of any breach of the site’s rules which you notice. Alternatively you can send a PM to any forum moderator (links below) or post a message in the "Report abuse" section of the forum.

Posts made for the sole purpose of commercial gain are strongly discouraged, and may be deleted.

Posts which are completely off topic, those which are clearly intended only to raise a member’s post count, and those whose main aim is to irritate other forum users, will be removed.

Any impersonation of another member will be treated as an abuse of the forum, and the offender will be barred from further use of the site.

The rules apply equally to "Signatures" and "User names" as they do throughout the forum.

This is an ENGLISH LANGUAGE forum. Please bear in mind that English will not be the first language of many of our Moderators which may lead to inadvertent misunderstandings. Topics must be in English unless by agreement with the Admin Team in advance.

When quoting someone else’s post, it can be helpful to edit it down to the pertinent section or sections, rather than repeating the entire post. One way to do this is to type ["Quote"="forum name"] then paste in the relevant section you wish to quote ["/quote"] without any of the quote marks (").

Make sure you have read the entire thread before posting to it. Otherwise, you may be covering old ground, or taking someone to task for something they have since retracted or clarified.

Avoid giving out personal information such as e-mail addresses, phone numbers etc. It is best to protect your personal details in any public forum.

When you read a post or review which inspires you, which you feel is well written, you may wish to let the person concerned know, either privately or publicly. Positive feedback is welcome in all parts of life, and this website is no exception.

Show equal respect for members old and new. Newbies may have more knowledge and background on the subject than you expected. They may also go on to become a "friend" or a senior member of the site.

Forum Moderators are volunteers that give up their time to help build a better forum. They will assist with focusing topics and enforcing guidelines. They have the ability to edit/delete posts, and to move, close or delete topics. If we edit a post and you do not like the changes, we will delete the message at your request. Our moderators are equipped with flak jackets and an unlimited supply of admin bricks. Do not attempt to engage them in direct combat.

Sometimes we may need to close or delete a thread which does not comply with the guidelines. This may affect a post by you which in itself was perfectly acceptable. Do not see this as a reflection on yourself in anyway.

This is a very relaxed and inclusive forum. These rules and guidelines are intended to help you to get the most out of it. We hope you will enjoy your time with us.

Respect the word "Private" in Private Message. Do not publish in the forum a Private Message (PM) you have sent or received.

Warnings
Once a warning has been issued, any further transgression of the site’s rules may lead to ejection from the site without further correspondence.

Legal notice
Please also see the site’s legal notice here. It is important that you read this.
http://www.progarchives.com/Legalnotice.asp

Your attention is especially drawn to the fact that you are personally responsible for your posts. Before starting a new thread though, please check to see whether there might already be a thread on the same topic. If there is, it is usually better to continue the discussion there. The forum has a powerful search facility which will assist you in your search.

Try to make the first post in a new thread as interesting and thought provoking as possible. Check that your post makes sense, and is not ambiguous. The most successful threads are those which get people talking in a constructive way.

Once you have established that your topic is worthy of a new thread, you need to identify where to post it. Below is a guide to where different types of threads should be opened. YOU MUST ENSURE YOU MAKE A REASONABLE EFFORT TO IDENTIFY THE CORRECT SECTION FOR YOUR THREAD. Any members who persistently create threads in the wrong sections (especially those erroneously placed in the "Prog Music Lounge") will receive a warning.

The title you give to your thread is very important, and should be carefully considered. The thread title is most commonly used when members are performing searches. For example, someone searching for threads about GENESIS would not find your thread listed in the search results if it was entitled "Foxtrot". By calling the thread "Foxtrot by Genesis" however, both the band and the album would be found. Likewise, refer to bands such as Dream Theater by their full names, not as DT.

Progressive music lounges

Prog Music lounge
This section is for general discussions about Progressive music. If however, you feel you have met the following criteria, and would like to be considered for induction as a Prog Reviewer, send a Private Message (PM) to "Atkingani" (the Collaborator Manager) making your case.

NOTE: It's important to bear in mind that the following criteria are solely for general guidance, and do not constitute any sort of prerequisites or guarantee of acceptance. Also, that although applications can be submitted at any time, the processing of applications will be done only a few times each year, so please do not be impatient.

Submit at least 30 well composed reviews, which talk in some detail about each album. Ideally, the albums covered will be spread across a range of bands and sub-genres, and will not simply focus on those in the top 100. If possible, try to do a sequence of at least 5 albums by one of these "lesser-known" bands.
Contribute one or more band biographies for bands on the site who do not presently have biographic details. (With a little time and research, these can be prepared quite easily, even if you are not too familiar with the band. Do not however simply copy the words from other people’s work. Collate the facts, then present them in your own words.)
Participate constructively in the forum, offering intelligent contributions and avoiding becoming embroiled in personal battles with other members. (When applying, make sure to mention both your reviewer name AND forum ID).
If you can obtain the agreement of a current Prog Reviewer or Special Collaborator to support your request, that will also help.

To become a Special Collaborator, you will normally need to have been a Prog Reviewer first.
