Why are Rush songs Madrigal and Rivendell hated?

Majority of Rush fans consider these two songs to be one of the worst Rush songs, but they don't give a clear explanation what's wrong with those songs. Why?

I think they are nothing special, but not bad either, I just don't get the hate. What you think?

I like both.  First I've heard that Rush fans don't like them.  They just aren't amongst their best known songs.

The Rush catalog is huge, I am sure there are many songs not liked by fans and non fans. But I have never heard that these two songs lead the charge.

Now I Think I Am Going Bald......different story. But in the context of Rush and their humor, the song is fine.

Surprised by this statement...... I always liked them - quiet, pastoral and providing contrasting light/shade to their more epic works. Hate seems a strong word for songs that settle well in their canon - but won't necessary make top 20 lists.

I've never noticed a lot of hate directed towards Madrigal, although I can see where the criticism for Rivendell comes from. At 5 minutes long, it's longer than most of the songs on the album, and nothing really happens. It feels like it could have ended about halfway through, and then they repeat the same 3 musical ideas again with very little change in intensity. It's not bad music, but it's pretty boring in my opinion. It's kind of like how people really hate More Fool Me - although at least MFM has some dynamic changes and only has 2 verses.

I don't see why someone would hate Madrigal; it's not the best song on the album, but at least it's short.

I personally like both songs. I would not say they are among Rush best, but not bad at all.

I have never hated either of songs. Actuallu I think Madrigal is really great (there are no bad songs in Farewell, like there isn´t Hemispeheres too). Rivendell is maybe a little too long, but fits fine into Fly By Night.

I think that isn't the case of hate, simply this two tracks are  very different in relation to the other tracks in their respective albums

I would say that they have incredible tracks before and after them. But that’s not to say that they are not liked as such.......

I agree. Anyway I didn´t skip also that song when listening Caress, although I think it´s the weakest song in Rush seventies albums.

Well, Caress is not my favourite, but I like it really much, specially Lakeside Park, Necromancer and Fountain. Hard to say, which is better, Fly By Night or Caress.

I’m not that excited with FBN, but Caress is great. Necromancer esp. part 1. My favourite piece of Rush music, period !
