two very spiritual musicians whos music takes you on a personal journey of questions with spiritual and personal reflections through life, of two men who never was satisfied with how thing was on the surface.

both also had a hiatus where the met a giant decisions in life. They changed their life and carer, i wonder what they think of each others journeys, I would love to see them both in a spiritual conversation.

I think Cat and Roger produces the purest melodies in all of rock, they bring the most honesty in their songs, few artists even today, can compete with, they tell how things are, and are honest.

They are also both naturally gifted instrumentalist, with an annoying ability to make any instrument becomes a part fo their flesh.

I agree, Aginor, two fantastic artists - Roger Hodgson and Cat Stevens.   I have been a fan of both for many, many years. While I am much more familiar with Roger's music than Cat's, I do find what you say to be completely true - both men pour their hearts into their songs.

While I have never seen Cat in concert, I have been so very fortunate to be able to see Roger.   I saw him when he was still with Supertramp, the band he co-founded, and I have seen him more recently with his tight, terrific band.   That pristine voice of his has not changed a bit and in fact sounds better today than on my Supertramp albums.   It was so wonderful to see him perform many of his songs that I have loved for years such as Give a Little Bit, Even in the Quietest Moments, The Logical Song, Fool's Overture, and so many more.    I am planning on seeing him again later this summer.   I saw his tour dates on Events on his FB page at http://www.Facebook.com/RogerHodgson.   Get to one of Roger's shows.   You will be so glad you did.

I've been very lucky to enjoy several Roger's shows, and I must say I've never attended to a such amazing concert!!
No matter if he performs in a solo show or with his band. They sound better and better each show.
Don't miss the oportunity to see him live, you will enjoy and will have the best time of your life. Take a look at his website http://www.rogerhodgson.com/documents/tour.html or his FB pagehttps://www.facebook.com/rogerhodgson/events, to find the best date for you. I find it actualy easyer to find artists to compare to Roger then Rick. Lyricaly Roger is compareable with, Cat. Spirituralistcly he touches both Cat and Jon Anderson. His phrasing and expression is actualy more close to Peter Gabriel, but also Phil Collins.

Rick is much harder to pinpoint, he is more straight forward, realist, more then spiritual, he is as honest and direct as Roger, which is why Supertramp is my favourite band, they tell a truth about life, like you, learn something.

Rick i find is lyrically closer to, Robert Lamb, realistc, when they sing about skelletons, it is actualy what they sing about. He is also similar to Van Morrison, Paul Simon and his older pal amd band colleague Gilbert O Sullivan.

Yes, both Roger Hodgson & Yusuf Islam (Cat), has many points in common ... both follow a spiritual perspective on life, and everything is part of this premise for both. The songs of both are fruits of these spiritual inspirations. In a sense, Roger and Yusuf have always sought inner peace and a safe path to follow.

Yusuf, in spite of always having a solo career, was very negatively exploited by the music industry, and he only found peace in life for himself when he found the Islam as a philosophy of life and religion. And it was so great for him that he even won the Nobel Man of Peace in 2004!

In 2006, Yusuf released an amazing album ''An Other Cup'', in 2007 the DVD ''Yusuf's Café Session'', in 2009 the wonderful album ‘’Roadsinger'', in 2010 the DVD ''Roadsinger Live In Australia'', and this year will release another album! Really, Yusuf does not stop!

Roger Hodgson, despite having started his recording career with a band (Supertramp), also always been a musician individual, very creative, and extremely unique as a singer and instrumentalist. Personally, I always watched Roger as a solo musician. By the way, his songs were always composed and arranged just for him (the band just performed the songs of Roger according to his instructions). So, when Roger began his official solo career in 1984, was not much surprise to me because I always saw him as a very creative force away from the band.

Anyway, Roger released a wonderful solo album in 2000, ‘’Open The Door’’ (in my opinion the biggest album in the history of Rock), in 2006 released a fantastic DVD ''Take The Long Way Home-Live In Montreal'', and in 2010 the album ''Classics Live Vol 1''. And of course, Roger continues to do shows around the world, and receiving love from fans all over the planet.

Particularly, I am a very lucky person because I had the opportunity to watch my hero, Roger, for 4 times in my country, Brasil: in 1998, in 2010 and twice in 2012!  In the case of Yusuf, the ''official promise’’ is that he will make a tour this year, 2013, in Brasil. I have not personally seen any show Yusuf, despite his having lived in Brasil from 1973 to 1975! I am very anxious!

I have been a fan of the music of both Roger and Yusuf for many years. Both Roger and Yusuf write such intimate lyrics. Not for them the churning out of rhyming couplets....However, I have only seen Roger in concert, once with Supertramp in 1977 and his solo show many times. His concerts bring his compositions to life. His storytelling when he introduces his songs gives an insight into what was happening in his life when the compositions came about. These songs resonate with so many others because they connect with some of the feelings they have experienced. Hide in your Shell is a fine example. I have never experienced Yusuf talking about his compositions in person...perhaps one day... but I know I come away from Roger's concerts having shared an experience, being uplifted and longing for his next show.

In response to this poll I will try to convey my vision and my personal experience.

No doubt that Roger Hodgson has a magnificent and extensive artistic career since it began back in the late '60s.

We're talking about the talent of an artist can possibly compare to what the Beatles meant in the history of music, and not coincidentally, was about to belong to this group.

The things of life,  originating did his first great successes of staff composition, when he created and co-founded the band Supertramp, here exhibited great songs created by him, and that many people today attribute to the name of this band, without knowing his real composer was Roger.

The variety in their songs, the way in which he has composed, and which are able to enter the soul and touch the heart of those who listen, are feelings that few artists achieve this level over a career spanning three generations, and is still transmitting all these emotions, perhaps more than ever, as his voice has improved and over the years, and the sound reflected in his live concerts and on their records the essence what is this great author.

His large repertoire includes songs of love, of joy, sadness, serenity, meditation, thought, and much more real connection with his audience, and his songs have been composed from the experiences of the author, and from depths of his heart, for this perhaps,  connected in this special way with people who hear any of his songs.

It amazes me in a special way when I speak of his songs with people I know, and everything is focused on generating the same harmony.

There are millions of people worldwide who have sung, and felt inside, songs like, "Dreamer," The Logical Song "," Give A Little Bit "," Fool's Overture "," Lord is it Mine "," Hide in Your Shell "," Take the Long Way Home "," Breakfast in America "," Two of Us "," A Soapbox Opera "," It's Raining Again "," Don't Leave Me Now "," Only Because of You "," Babaji "," Lovers in the Wind "," Child of Vision "," Love is a Thousand Times "," If Everyone was Listening "........

Yes, I have set quite a few songs, and all were composed by Roger Hodgson, but this is just a small representation of the full repertoire of global successes.

I think the best way to check my words, is to attend one of their live concerts taking place in their "Breakfast in America" World Tour 2013 that is made by many countries, certain that any of these shows are near you . Give enjoy your soul, your mind and heart of a magical moment, I'm sure you will not regret, and think again in the next.

Interesting that you pose this topic.  I think why they are both so loved is because they write about real life experiences that myself and people from all over the world can relate to. I have heard Roger Hodgson speak in concert that his songs actually have dual meaning - although some can be taken as between man and woman, many were actually written to God.  I would love to hear what the two artists would have to say about each other:)  I do know that Yusef came to Roger's show last year when he performed with the King's orchestra in Morocco.   It feels like they are indeed kindred spirits.  I am happy that they are both still touring - that is a double bill I would gladly pay to see:)

Roger Hodgson! You have to see him live to truly see, hear, and appreciate his talent and skill.  The man is a master. He "hears" music and sound like no one I've ever known or heard of. I often wonder if, years from now, people will hold him in the esteem that Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart are held.  His music and lyrics come from his soul and that same soul guides all he does in his life.  In my humble opinion, No other artist compares to Roger.

Roger Hodgson is a phenomenal artist - even better than he was when he wrote and sang all that great music with Supertramp.  I like a few of Cat Steven's songs, but I don't see equal talent between the two.  In my opinion Roger's lyrics and music are much deeper and meaningful.  Listen to the numerous instruments, their flow throughout his songs, the changes, and especially the messages in his words.   Nope, I don't hear that with Cat Stevens' music.  Roger Hodgson is a full head and torso above Cat Stevens.

I would never look at this as Roger Hodgson vs Cat Stevens (Yusif Islam, as he is known today).  Both men have stayed true to themselves, allowed us to peek at the most personal, intimate experiences of their lives through their music.  There are rare few other artists that lead this way, with their hearts and souls.

To this duo I have to add John Lennon.  The three artists have lead us through a spiritual awakening, reaching out to us, the common person, inviting us to partake in the expression of feelings we all have but often are not able to state so completely, elegantly.

I miss John every day (it's been 30 years since his death!) and wonderfully, Yusif has offered new music in the last four years and limited touring in Europe and down under..... Most astounding of all is Roger Hodgson.

Yes, Roger did take a break from touring, offering his music to us, however almost 10 years ago discovered his fans so wanted to experience his music live.  When he emerged from his time spent away from the music industry, he was a different person.  From the stage, he reached out to his audiences, no longer hiding behind his instruments and engaged his fans.  He offered a candid, personal peek into who he was and collected so many fans along the way world wide.
To this day, he continues to tour and collect fans of all ages.  Go, travel to feel his magic live........ you will never regret your time spend with Roger.  Be warned, once you have experienced one performance you return again and again!! Surely PA should be able to recognize Roger's music as far more melodically, harmonically, dynamically, timbrally (?) rich.

Oh I see, there are noobs voting.

I am no noob and I voted for Stevens. Your post is a touch patronising I feel. One should not assume that everyone has the same taste in music and no-one should under estimate Steven's genius. I for one always found Hodgson annoying but then again maybe I just haven't listened to him enough.

Totally agree re Roger's music being far more melodically, harmonically, & dynamically, rich.
I can tell this due to my huge musical experience & knowledge, despite being a "noob" (I take it that noob in this context means new to the site, not newborn!) Wink

^ Just listen to Cat Steven's album Foreigner and then tell me that is not melodic, harmonic and dynamically rich. It is all subjective I guess but Hodgson worked so well cos he had Rick D and the band to work off. Never liked his solo work so as a solo artist I would have to say Cat Stevens all the way.
