Topic: Porcupine Tree vs The Mars Volta Posted: March 20 2018 at 14:49 |
Since both bands are no longer around(although it took PT a lot longer to make an official announcement)I thought I would do a poll with both of them. I was going to add Muse but I think since they are still around it wouldn't be fair. Please vote for the band you like more.

Definitley PT. Even with The Incident they have a great string of records vs two or three for TMV.

I know which is why I didn't list them.
However, I just saw online earlier that TMV do plan on reuniting at some point possibly later in the year. That will probably happen after a break from ATDI.

I can only enjoy TMV in small doses. Still a great band, however.

ditto. My wife loves the group.. and through repeated listens.. I've tried.. I mean I should enjoy it.. it is more up my stylistic alley that SWilson was... but like you.. it never clicked. At there is at least one SWilson..err..PT album I really really do enjoy.. so an easy vote.

Porcupine Tree for sure. Never been a fan of The Mars Volta, but PT is one of my favorite modern day prog bands.

Even though I started the poll I won't vote. I know most of PT's material but very little TMV. Still, I think I prefer PT by a pretty wide margin.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Thinking out loud here and gratuitously reminiscing.
I'm not a fan of either, but I have heard music by both that I appreciate (I have bought albums by both in my early trying to modernize my tastes phase not that long before joining this site, and neither did I like but later on I found some music that I do quite enjoy). It was discovering Miriodor that initially changed my mind that "modern" Prog can be as good as classic era music, then U Totem....
I started with In Absentia by Porcupine Tree and I disliked it. I started with De-Loused In The Comatorium by The Mars Volta and disliked it. In both cases I preferred the subsequent album, which was in each case the next album I heard. I think I'd choose Frances The Mute over Deadwing. I prefer earlier PT material (early to mid 90s) to later stuff. No vote, though, as neither did I become big on and I feel like I haven't heard enough of either's discography or heard it recently enough to vote fairly.

TMV for De-loused and Frances. (After that, I jump off.)
