I am a Sinfield fan...so, I choose the early KC. When Wetton and Bruford arrived, they became a better band. but, the early period is more symphonic and weird, which is my taste. After all, Sinfield named them King Crimson. It's a pretty strange, yet magnificent name for rock band. Especially in 1969!!!

Love both, but I think that the Wetton period is just a bit more consistent, plus the latter had Starless. Dare I say their finest hour???

All of the above! That's why I'll help out the first era, and give a vote to it.

Wetton-era. The early stuff was good - particularly In The Court of the Crimson King and Islands - but the 1972 - '73 - '74 era was where Fripp found his calling. Also, Larks' Tongues In Aspic improved on a lot of stuff that was attempted earlier on Lizard.

Tough question. Wetton era was more stable.

"Wetton-era," due to David Cross' brilliant violin/viola work, all of Larks' Tongue in Aspic, and "Starless."

I find everything between Court and Larks' to be fair to middling. But the Wetton era is by far the best Crimson. |
Agreed. Fripp seemed to slow down after Court, letting other British upstarts strut their stuff before showing one and all with the Wetton-era albums that he was still the Crimson King!

Although I haven't heard Islands yet, I'll go for Sinfield on the strength of the debut and Lizard. I am not a big Poseidon fan. I like the Wetton albums a lot, but I am not as crazy about them as most people here are.

Starless and Bible Black very underrated - some lovely mellotron melodies. Wetton era!

Both incarnations of the Crimson name are worthy but it's gotta be the Wetton era for me. Up until Larks Tongues, they had many moments of brilliance certainly but the albums are very patchy and uneven IMO. If you sat someone down who had never heard any Crimson and played them Poseiden and Red back to back, they would probably have difficulty identifying both albums as being by the same band.

This is tricky as my favourites are probably Lizard and Larks' Tongues in Aspic.....
Today, I vote Sinfield.
