It's ironic that in arguably the best prog year of the last 30 years, 2 of the most popular bands on this list (where is Dream Theater??) released one of their least best albums. (TMV and PT)

Haven't heard all of them, but it's hard to imagine anything better than Magma's album. The Hazards of Love comes close -- I cited it as my favorite album of '09, and it comes pretty darn close to being a perfect rock opera - all the most amazing since I don't really care much for any of the band's other albums (I have a few). But Magma it is.
Magma wins, Hazards and Part the Second get Honorable Mention. The Incident is a fine album too, but it's only "okay" by Porcupine Tree's high standards. Edited by HolyMoly - October 14 2011 at 12:20 |

One of the best years for prog releases, at least in the past 10 years! I like most on that list, so choosing is difficult. I think MotW's "Part The Second", is a worthy choice for number one release of 2009

It's got another vote now from me , and if I recall corrctly, I voted for it in top place for that collab album choice contest thing. I just think that hardly any of those collabs who would have voted for it (or put it high in their list for the collab only contest) have voted in this poll. By the way, Miriodor's Avanti made number ten in the collab best list and didn't make this one.I'have only heard two from this list (the Magma and Maudlin). |

As a symphonic/retro/prog metal only listener at the time I remember being disappointed. Now looking back it has so many masterpieces that I didn't even hear till this year.

Some really great albums were released, and I agree thw IQ album is their best but, for me the decision is easy BIG BIG TRAIN! What a stunning album. It encapulates everything that is great about Prog imo.

An excellent year. Big Big Train just about beats some fine competition from the likes of IQ.

Wow I hadn't realised about AAL. Not here? . Surely 100 people have rated such an amazing album. That's another one that I would have been torn on whether to vote for.
