I believe Nick did try to play "Two Suns in the Sunset", but Waters just wouldn't be satisfied with the result and asked him to do it over and over again, until Nick said something about he wouldn't be able to do it and better get someone else. I read that some while ago, so I may be omitting, or slightly changing, some details.

But at least he is not in the way of the music's essence, the stuff that was being delivered on guitar, bass, and keys.

Yeah, it is a good interview - without your question, I might never have seen it! So thanks!

A little research reveals this. From an interview with Roger Waters:
Q: Why did you get Jeff Porcaro to play on ‘Mother’? A: It’s got 5/4 bars in it. Nick, to his great credit, has no pretence about that, it was clear that he could not play it. He said “I can’t play that.” Or maybe somebody said to him, “Nick, maybe you should get somebody else to play this because you’re struggling” It was the same thing with ‘Two Suns In The Sunset’. It was in 5/4 so [former Sly Stone and David Bowie drummer] Andy Newmark played that." I've always wondered why Andy Newmark takes the seat at the drums in the last song of The FInal Cut. So here's the question: Why do you think Roger Waters (it was his project) decided to change the lifetime drummer of Pink Floyd in that song? Wasn't Mason capable to perform it?
