I don't know about overrated, but their catalogue is definitely not spotless. I
can't really get into most of the studio stuff on "Ummagumma," and the
movie soundtracks "More," and "Obscured by Clouds" are not up to their
usual standards. "Meddle" is one of my favorites. It was just before the Roger
Waters domination, but shows where they were heading. "The Final Cut"
seemed like a letdown after the wall, but I think there is a lot of inspired
music there. Don't much care for "The Division Bell" at all. The rest are all
gems as far as I'm concerned.

They are Pink Floyd and they have produced some very good music over the years. Over-rated? No.

It all about personal taste!
I don't like DSOtM all that much, and I'd actually be inclined to say I think it's overrated, but you mentioned A Saucerful Of Secrets,( came out in 68' by the way, not 70's) and Meddle !!! By far underrated, if anything, that album is wonderful.
But then again, I can't get upset b/c you have your opinions and are entitled to them, as I am my own

Pink Floyd is very UNDERRATED! Every single one of their albums including THE FINAL CUTare all great in their own distinct ways! WYWH, DSOTM, ANIMALS, MEDDLE, PIPER, THE WALL, etc. are all jaw-dropping albums.

What do you mean by "overrated?"
(I think you mean that you don't like some Floyd albums as much as many other people do. Why not just say that? (if you must)
Overrated" is a word which does not just reflect your opinion, but also takes issue with the opinions, tastes, integrity, and/or insight of others. It is very confrontational, and judgmental. It's a dumb word, for use in dumb, immature, arrogant negative threads.

This might be just my own uninformed opinion, but whenever I hear the words 'Pink Floyd' I instantly hear in my head an overpowering chatter of journalists, a chatter that boils down to the band's being perceived as greater and more perfect than God. In popular imagination and certain sections of the media they still seem to be regarded as gods whose music is an Eighth Day of Creation, don't they? Correct me if I'm wrong, please, but don't they share this pedestal with Led Zep, U2, the Rolling Stones etc. ?
If this is the case, then of course they and all these other bands are overrated. And there's nothing wrong with thinking so. I like them a lot - but they should hardly be above constructive criticism.

I really believe that many Pink Floyd albums are totally overrated...

They may get the overrated status due to Dark Side of the Moon being the album on the charts the longest and for the "genius" adoration of drug blank-up, Syd Barrett, by certain people.
They may get the overrated status because certain radio stations continue to overplay certain songs from Dark Side to the Wall, when they could be playing songs from their other albums, or other groups such as Porcupine Tree
That stated, the overrated status is not due to prog rock fans, but due to other music fans who want to hear "money" for the ten millionth time, instead of other material, and less than informed members of the music media.

So, to be clear, what is the real topic of this thread?
Is it:
- I don't like Floyd very much.
- Do people like them as much as they claim to?
- Is the professional music press and/or radio corrupt?
- Are the Prog Archives reviewers corrupt?
- Are Floyd fans dumb, and inferior in their taste in music to me?
"Overrated" by whom, and for what reason?

Probably something along the lines of: "Am I the only one who doesn't love PF?" Yeah, the wording could have been better, but I don't think any disrespect towards PF fans was intended in this thread.

Thanks for the clarification.
As you can see, I have "issues" with the ubiquitous "overrated" word, as I find it to be confrontational, and ill-chosen. I don't think those who like to fling it around really consider what it implies. To those who like to use the word here: don't. Talk about your opinion, don't presume to judge mine/others' or my review/rating.
If you (not you personally, V13) don't care for a band or album, but you've no proof of corruption or stupidity on the part of the album or band's fans and reviewers, then just write "I don't like it." Drop the "overrated" -- along with "best" and "worst," it is over-used around here, and it attempts to paint the subjective as somehow being non-subjective.

I hope you don't mind if I add to that - please can people not write that such-and-such is "a pile of cr*p" or the many similar variants of same. It is vulgar, crass, offensive and shows a distinct lack of command of the English language and lack of respect for musicians. There are ways of saying you don't like something without being rude. This is not aimed at anyone in particular ...... Phew! That's better
