I think PF ARE overrated, but not because they were a bad band or anything like that... I believe there are many other bands - Marillion for example - who deserve the same recognition / status / success but don't get it. I remember having sold loadwagons of "Division Bell"-CDs in the shop I used to work then but only a few copies of "Brave", though the latter was the far better ( and a quite more interesting ) album... i got angry... but, no, I can understand anyone who's mad about Pink Floyd and perhaps don't understand myself too well cause it's "their music's got EVERYTHING I'm usually getting off on but god only knows with them I - mostly - don't". It's not my emotional world... and any true PF-Fan may slap me for picking "Have a Cigar" as my favourite PF-Song EVER !

Surely David Gilmour is NOT overrated...Mr. Waters on the other hand...come on guys, get real, he cannot play bass, he cannot sing, so how can you believe he wrote everything!

I don't think anyone thinks Waters is on a par with Chris Squire or Geddy Lee (to name but two), but to say that he cannot play bass seems a bit exxagerated to me. As to his singing, he hasn't got a beautiful voice (neither has Gilmour, for that matter), but he's incredibly expressive. And then, in which way are playing or singing well related to songwriting ability?

No. Not overrated.
They play for the song and the mood, not to show off. They were extremely creative in the 60s & 70s, which is what progressive means. Later work was not so creative but still well crafted.

Fire up the flux capacitor ! We're taking this Delorean through all four dimensions.
What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum.

Since when are Saucerful, Meddle, Final Cut, and Division Bell overrated?
I have always thought Saucerful and Meddle are extremely underrated!

Okay, let me get this out of the way. I LIKE Pink Floyd, but they definitely ARE overrated. It is possible to think both of those things. It is not opinion to say they are overrated as musicians, because most of them are hacks. Waters is NOT a talented musician. I'm going to guess that anyone who thinks he's a great bass player has never actually played bass. Mason is NOT an amazing drummer. Gilmour is at best a competent guitar player. Barrett...well, his talent was being a druggie. And he did do that very well. The song writing in Floyd is mostly bland and uninspired. Most of their songs are the same I-IV-V progressions over and over, occassionally throwing in a ii and vi for good measure. SO JUST ACCEPT IT! There are prog bands out there that stomp all over Floyd in EVERY aspect. This DOESN'T mean you can't like Floyd a lot! I think they have some wonderful stuff.

I love Pink Floyd, they came up with, in my opinion, wonderful
music despite a lack of amazing musicianship (though Gilmour's good for
sure). I do believe they've been somewhat over-rated by me over
the years.

Why do we discuss anything at all?
The post included a lot of like/dislike, and humble questions..... Some people are more "If you no like...no listen."... That stops discussions

In my opinion, the Barrett era Pink Floyd is over-rated by would-be "druggie prodigies". My favorite (and what I feel to be the deepest and most musically satisfying) time in Pink Floyd is actually after Roger Waters exerted his stranglehold on the band. I am a huge Waters fan (more of a Waters fan than a Floyd fan actually), and I find albums such as Wish You Were Here, Animals, and The Final Cut to be some of the Floyds better works. Animals is my main point, the album has great musical structure, cool instrumental pieces, good lengthy epics, and a lot of great Gilmour leads. Not to mention Rick Wright's keyboard playing is pretty powerful at a lot of times in this album (the intro to Pigs, the keyboard solos in Dogs, etc.).
I dont necessarily think Pink Floyd is overrated, but I think their most well known releases (DSotM, The Wall) are. As a matter of fact, I find albums like Meddle, AMLOR, and The Division Bell to be highly underrated. I rocked the Meddle Album all through my freshman year of high school, I loved it so much, and, though I'm a firm believer in Floyd after Waters, I followed Waters much more closely than Pink Floyd after his departure. And I'm glad, for it led me to such amazing pieces of work as Amused To Death and Radio KAOS.
